Are you kidding? Here in California I think the weather is mentioned at least 10 times a day. You wouldn't think so, but it is. They always always overdo the storm warnings here. You have to be from another part of the US originally to pick up the humor in it. One teacher who's originally from back East, came in the office last week laughing because she heard on the weather report that there was a "drizzle alert." Every moderate rain storm is called "Storm Watch 2006." Can you imagine? A drizzle alert? TIS

Ah, the weather. It's the quintessential topic starter of conversation. It provides a comfort level of communication between strangers, acquaintances, colleagues, family and friends.
When we are placed in any of many social situations, such as time spent on an elevator with someone, waiting in a check out line, walking through the neighborhood, etc., we find it natural to want to recognize a fellow human being. And the most common area of interest is our physical environment. It's an area where there is generally no disagreement and some universal interest. "Do you think it'll ever stop raining?" "I'd hate to be tarring the roof today." And "Thank God it's not colder, or this would all be snow." You wouldn't necessarily bring up
It's a polite, often meaningless discourse, but it is better than the prolonged awkward silences that tend to separate us slightly from those people we encounter daily.
My late father-in-law would always talk to me about the weather, and I initially thought it was because he was trying to make conversation when we didn't know each other too well. As I dated and eventually married his daughter and he became as close as any other family member to me, he woulkd still speak frequently of the weather as he was a weather junkie, who could watch the weather channel all night if he could. I would hear him say things like, "Wow, 112 degrees in Borneo. Where the hell is that?"
And if a blizzard was hitting, he'd watch the channel with childlike excitement. Weathermen were like gods to him. He ran a restaurant and the first customers of the day would order their eggs before 7 AM and ask him what the daily forecast was.

I can give a shit less about the weather, talking about it is a waste of speech. My family, and everybody else, however, talks about it all the time. The weather in Iowa is inconsistant making it a popular topic of discussion. I actually agree with you... I hate talking about the weather, but I still find myself talking about it all the time because everyone brings it up. I mean, I guess you would have to be bereft of all your senses in order to truly not know how to talk about the weather. It's the easiest way to relate to the person in front of you even though they may be a complete stranger.
