Alright. I keep watching you lot talk of all these famous American mobsters, but I know nothing of any of them. My knowledge of real life mafia is basically nil.

So, short of reading every post on this board (Of which I have read quite a few) what do you recommend that I read to get a basic knowledge of who killed who and ran what?

Books, web sites etc?

Can anyone help? I know you will!

try looking for "The History of the Mob in America" dvd. that's the only one i have, and a few books. i know a lot of members on this board have more to recommend.

For books I would recommend Mafia Dynasty by John H. Davis another good book is Donnie Brasco by Joe Pistone and that Mafia for Dummies(no pun intended) is very informative. As for movies the one Goodfellaoggie is good and I got two DVD box sets from Best Buy called Mafia The Inside Story and La Cosa Nostra The Mafia An Expose. Those are really good.

I agree,if you're going to read anything about the mafia, you should read Mafia Dynasty. That book was great. John H. Davis wrote about a conversation he had with Lucky Luciano while in Italy.

AWESOME, find out about ALL 26 families as of 1997 with a couple updates on Trials since.

read Mafia Encyclopedia! (I got it yesterday from Library, it's AWESOME!)

I recommend Killer - Autobiography of a Hit Man for the Mafia by Joey. His name isn't Joey (for his protection obviously). He is a real hit man who has worked for Meyer Lansky, Frank Costello and Jack Dragna. After reading this book I realized how realistic Goodfellas was (closest thing to learn about the real mafia). Enjoy and hope you read/get it.
