Feds Indict 17 in NY Linked to Gambino Crime Family
Tue Jun 4, 3:25 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Seventeen alleged members or associates of the Gambino crime family, including reputed boss Peter Gotti, were indicted on Tuesday on extortion and corruption charges relating to operations on the New York waterfront, federal officials said.

U.S. Attorney Alan Vinegrad said the charges were the culmination of a three-year investigation that "revealed a stark picture of the mob extortionate control over the waterfront in almost every conceivable way."

"What all of this shows is that when it comes to the waterfront, the greedy grip of organized crime knows no bounds," Vinegrad said at a news conference.

Focusing on the Gambino family's influence on labor unions and businesses operating at piers in Brooklyn and Staten Island, the government alleged that corruption extended to rigging the selection of executive positions at the International Longshoreman's Association, a labor organization representing 85,000 union members in the United States.

The 68-count indictment charged the 17 men with an array of crimes including extortion, wire fraud, labor racketeering, money laundering, illegal gambling and witness tampering.

Peter Gotti, at the top of the list of those indicted, allegedly became head of the Gambino family after his brother, John Gotti, was convicted of racketeering in 1999.

The government claimed Peter Gotti received monthly payments for several years from extortion and gambling rackets.

Charges of extortion and wire fraud against the longshoreman's association and its national health plan were also lodged.

State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer asked that five of the 17 men be detained pending trial on the grounds they posed a serious danger to the community and could try to leave the country.

The five were Peter Gotti, Anthony Ciccone, an alleged captain in the Gambino family, Primo Cassarino, an alleged soldier, and Richard Bondi and Frank Scollo, Gambino family associates, the government said.

Bloody hell, they ever going to be left alone. I know what they are doing is wrong but I say target the crazy Russians for a while or else that is going to be one hell of a problem as it keeps rising.

It won't be long now. The Italian mafia in the US will soon be a thing of the past. They are an easy target for the FBI. I agree about the Russian and other ethnic mobs. They are far more likely to deal with and supply terrorist groups than the Italians and will probably be getting a lot more attention from the feds.

When will the learn that removing the HEAD of the Family, will just result in a NEW Head. They're like Presidents, Vice President, Speaker Of The House, etc.

Someone else will Become Don Gambino!

What about Gene Gotti?

I actually read somewhere, I think this could be for Sicilia itself though, that some Italians are breaking off and working in cells much like the Russians do. But there's still the old school mafia working in heirarchy and that's why they're so easy to target. Especially since RICO.

The Gambino Family and its predecessors have always run the NYC waterfront rackets. When Albert Anastasia was the Don, his brother, Tough Tony Anastasio (spelled his name differently) ran the waterfront. When Tough Tony died in '63, his son in law, Anthony Scotto, took over. Scotto became one of the most politically connected Mafiosi in NYC.

Just found this. I bet Seagal would still kick all there arses.....Kapow.

Steven Seagal cited in arrest of mafia members
5:20am Wednesday, 05th June 2002

Seventeen alleged members and associates of the Gambino crime family have been arrested.

The 68-count federal indictment includes charges of extortion, money laundering and witness tampering.

Among the alleged crimes was an attempt to extort hundreds of thousands of dollars "from an individual in the film industry".

One of the defendants, Julius Nasso, and others allegedly demanded $150,000 for every film the victim made, the letter says.

Nasso is a former business partner of Steven Seagal, who he sued earlier this year for $60 million for backing out of a film contract.

Prosecutors say a Gambino captain and Nasso, 49, were caught on tape allegedly plotting the shakedown of Seagal.

The captain instructed Nasso to demand the actor pay the family $150,000 for each film he made.

Nasso pleaded innocent to extortion and was released on $1.5 million bond.

One of the other accused is Peter Gotti, brother of "Teflon Don" John Gotti, who is reportedly the acting head of the Gambino family following the imprisonment of other family members.

Peter Gotti, 62, Richard V Gotti, 59, and Richard G Gotti, 34, all pleaded innocent to racketeering. The alleged boss was ordered held without bail; the younger men were released on $300,000 bond each.
