NYTimes reports today that the Apalachin, NY, estate that was the site of the famous 1957 gangsters' convention is up for auction. The 11-room home, dating from 1867 and including 42 of the original 130 acres, is expected to fetch $400k. Photo with story shows Vincent Vasisco, one of the Staties who raided the place, standing next to the barbecue pit where he and his colleagues pinched many of the guests. "Talk about gentlemen," he says of his famous detainees. "They didn't do anything to antagonize anyone." Any of my fellow padrinos planning to put in a bid?

That's quite cool Turnbull. Do you know of any links that'll show how the house looks today?

One of the locals quoted in the story said Joe Barbara was a great guy, always ready with a handout, "If I had all the money that people owed him, I could buy his house for cash."
As for having a meeting there: Great idea! According to the Joe Bonanno autobio, "A Man of Honor," the reason they had the convention at Barbara's house was that he had a "legit" job as a beer and soda distributor. To support that business, he had a conference room and a large parking lot on premises--perfect for a Don's Convention.

11 rooms on 42 acres for only 400K? Seems like the real estate inflation mania hasn't reached upstate yet. Considering the history of the place, they could probably get a lot more by auctioning it on ebay.

I remember the one with John Cameron Swayze, old-time newscaster, whose Timex was still ticking after a neck-snapping bobsled run or something equally stressful.
Speaking of watches: yesterday's NYTimes also had an article on early '60's Bulova Accutron watches, which are big collectors' items now.
