Geary has his big argument the Micheal Colzone over the casino license.They part bitter enemies. So what does he do? He plays hide the salami with a girl in a joint owned by his enemy.Did the possibility of blackmail ever crss his mind?Wasn't there any other place he could go to in the entire state of Nevada.He had to know who owned it.I say its a major flaw in the story.

Yeah, I was just thinking this very thing when reading Fame's thread about who killed the whore. Perhaps one of the regulars has a good explanation for this.

Why did Geary have to know who owned the place? It wasn't like it was named "Fredo's Fantasyland". I'm sure Fredo was not outside pimping the girls and handing out flyers.

Also, Geary had been there a few times before he met with Mike (remember Geary had said he had done it with the girl before). Once the little head takes over the big head all caution is lost.

Why does anybody do anything patently stupid around women? Because, as the saying goes, "when the prick stands up, the brains get buried in the ground." Why did President Clinton screw around with a girl young enough to be his daughter, in the White House, while the GOP and a Republican-appointed special prosector were out to nail his ass for Whitewater and other assorted "crimes"? Why did Wilbur Mills, while he was chairman of the all-powerful House Ways and Means Committee, have himself photographed screwing around in a striptease club with a stripper, who later turned up in his car parked in Rock Creek Park? Why did Michael Jackson, the world's most popular and famous entertainer, publicly admit that he likes to sleep with boys?

Wasn't it Tom who told Geary that "My brother owns this place?" Maybe it's a stretch, but I took it that it was possible Geary didn't know. Then again, it does seem logical that he would, considering how much he hated the family.

TIS Tom's quote threw me off as well. The only thing I can think of is that Fredo DIDN'T "OWN" the place. Joe Shmoe was the LEGAL owner and Geary didn't know Fredo was the one running it.

In all likelyhood the brothel was set up in the name of a dummy corporation with the real owners being The Corleone's with Fredo as the overseer of the brothels. Let us remember that brothels were, and still are, LEGAL businesses in Nevada. So if Geary had even wanted to check out who the owner was, and I highly doubt that he did, a corporation name would come up in the search. I am sure that The Corleone's had "interests" in several brothels in Nevada as a means for Fredo to receive a lucrative income, something that was "His." When Geary pissed off Mike with his arrogance and disrepect, you can bet that a plan on how to get this Senator to cooperate with them went into effect. A plan that probably was set up with the intention of finding any kind of dirt on the Senator. Lo and behold it was probably found out that Geary frequented the brothels. Word is put out to the managers of the brothels that if Geary ever shows up, they are to let Neri and Co. know. Geary shows up at one, being a regular, and the manager, madame, or whatever sends Geary a "special" girl for him to be with. Neri and co. are contacted, the Senator is drugged, and the rest all falls into place.

I think that we're overlooking a major flaw in Geary's character, not a flaw in the movie. Geary was arrogant. He was a US Senator! An American! He was not going to be taken down by these dumb guineas. His faith in his position and his underestimation of the Corleone's (along with his womanizing) is what undid him.

Yes, underestimation and arrogance are constant running themes in all three films. The Don understimated Sollozzo. Sollozzo and McCluskey underestimated Michael. Roth and Michael underestimated each other several times. Etc., etc...
To DC's earlier point: While gambling in Nevada was technically illegal until 1931, prostitution has never been illegal on a statewide basis. It was, and still is, a county option. Today legal brothels exist in 10 of Nevada's 13 counties. Ironically: when the gangsters began building hotels in Vegas in the late Forties, they lobbied the Nevada Legislature to make prostitution illegal. The gangsters put up a big front about the state's need for a "clean" and "moral" image . They really wanted nothing to stand between the suckers and their casinos. The legislature responded by passing a law making prostitution illegal in any county with more than 250k population, which, as it happened at that time, only applied to Clark County, where Vegas is located.
