On Monday, at 9:00 EST, National Geographic channel will be airing a new show called "Inside The Mafia." Looks pretty interesting.

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.

Thanks for the heads-up, Don Cardi! I'll definitely have to check it out. Here's the official site, with a video intro, and information on the first three episodes:

National Geographic - Inside the Mafia

"Growing up my dad was like 'You have a great last name, Galifianakis. Galifianakis...begins with a gal...and ends with a kiss...' I'm like that's great dad, can we get it changed to 'Galifianafuck' please?" -- Zach Galifianakis

Alas, I don't receive National Geographic on my cable system. Perhaps you will be kind enough to provide a review?

Is anyone watching this right now?

Not too bad so far. Only found one error. The show claims that Charles Luciano got the name "Lucky" from surviving a brutal knifing. That is a myth. he actually got the name "Lucky" from being a very lucky gambler.

Is that Ray Liotta narrating the show? Sure sounds like him.

after looking over the site again *I Think* that by "episode" they meant hour, so each show is 2 hours (7-9,9-11) but each show has "2 episodes" because all I'm seeing for tv schedule are 2 2 hour segments all month.

I'm watching it now. There are only two parts as mentioned (9-11) tonight and same time tomorrow. According to the tivo guide, the first part will re-air tonight at midnight.

Hey DC, sorry I missed this thread! I made a topic on it in General tonight without even realizing I'd reposted. I was caught up in the Astros game, so I didn't watch much, but my dad taped it, so hopefully I'll get a chance to see that.

Lets say you didn't hear about the show until after the fact. Will they have any re-showings of "Inside the Mafia"? I'd really like to see it.

No, I am being very serious. For many years the press and several authors have reported & written that he got his name "Lucky" because he survived a massive beating with many stab wounds. But it has been found that he had been called "Lucky" way before that beating ever took place. He was very "Lucky" when he gambled.

Another alleged source of "Lucky": he narrowly escaped being whacked by Vincent (Mad Dog) Coll on orders from Salvatore Maranzano. In fact, Meyer Lansky's assassins were murdering Maranzano even as Coll was on his way up to Maranzano's office to get his last instructions before going after Luciano.

[/b][/quote]Thanks for that TB, I totally forgot about that theory. Yes, there have been several theories as to how he aquired his nickname. But I guess that the most interesting way to lure the viewer is by telling the story that he aquired his name after surviving a beating and stabbing. Sort of "hollywoodesque!"

BTW, I taped last nights episode on DVD and will tape tonights part 2. I would be more than happy to send you a copy for your viewing pleasure.

For some reason, I got the same impression. Unfortunately, I don't get the National Geographic channel either. Hopefully they'll release it on DVD, although DVDs from National Geographic tend to be pricey.

His original last name was Lucania. "Lucky" resulted from a broken-english pronunciation of Lucania by immigrants.

For the Dutch People...Sunday 3rd of July...National Geographic will broadcast, probably, the same Mafia show. Four parts of 1 hour each. It starts around 21:00 and end at 00:00 hours. Watch it!

Can someone drop a summary on what the shows talked about? I don't have the national geographical channel.
