Was Joe Valachi a made guy in the Genovese-family or in the Bonanno-family? I always thought he was a Genovese-member but he told in the Senate hearings that Bonanno was his godfather. But if he was a Bonanno-member, why was the most information about Vito Genovese and the entire Genovese-family?

Acording to his book The Valachi Papers he was a member of the Genovese family I the book he never mentioned anything about being apart of the Bonnano family.... He actually shared a cell with Vito Genovese and apparently the Godfather gave Valachi the "Kiss of Death" and Valachi scared out of his mind killed a man he thought was comming to kill him and it turned out that someone was going to try and kill him but Valachi killed the wrong guy and that his why he turned Stool Pigeon, because he wanted to escape the death penalty..... But I am almsot completly positive he was in the Genovese famiily, at least according to his book thats the deal.... Joe Batters

But i saw parts of the hearings of Joe Valachi on a DVD called Mafia Empire and I saw this: Valachi: He is my, what you call, Godfather. Senator: In other words...(interrupted by Valachi) Valachi: He becomes my godfather. Senator: (finishing his question but i cant hear what he said because he and Valachi talk at the same time) Valachi answers: Right. Senator: Now, who was in that matter, by that (a word i cant hear), who was chosen, who became your Godfather Valachi: Joe Bonanno
Very strange.....Because he always talked about Genovese and the Genovese-family.....

The ceremony that Valachi participated in was almost identical to the one described by Palermo Chief of Police Giuseppe Alongi forty-four years earlier in 1886, when he described the initiation rituals of “La Mafia” from what informers had told him over the years.
Joseph Bonanno (CORBIS) Joe was then assigned a gombah, or godfather, to be his mentor and immediate boss. From a random selection around the table, the designated man was said to be Joseph Bonanno, also known as Joe Bananas. Over the next thirty-five years, Bonnano was alleged to be a powerful figure among the Cosa Nostra, heading his own group before being deposed in a bloody power struggle that sent him into exile in Arizona. At the age of 95, Bonanno still lives there to this day.

There is a very complicated story on how Valachi switched around families. You can find it here: http://www.crimelibrary.com/gangsters_outlaws/mob_bosses/valachi/lucky_5.html?sect=15 and be sure to click on the previous chapter, too. Some of the confusion stems from the fact that Valachi was actually made by Salvatore Maranzano. The fact that Bonanno was appointed Valachi's godfather didn't necessarily mean that he wound up in Bonanno's family. Why? Because Bonanno wasn't the boss at the time--he was a subordinate of Maranzano. Apparently, after his victory in the Castellemmarese War, Maranzano put Valachi in Gagliano's family. Then Maranzano was whacked. Valachi eventually landed with Genovese.
