Hi guys, If a capo is promoted to Consigliere, what happens to his crew? Can he stay as a capo and be consigliere or does he have to give up his crew in order to concentrate on advising the boss? If he does give up his crew, where does he get his income from? What about when a capo is promoted to underboss? Do made men (but not capos) ever get promoted straight to underboss or consigliere? If so, where would they get their income from?
Sorry for all the Q's but they've been bugging me for ages!

People like Caporegimes aren't 'paid'. They work relatively independent, and make their own money. In fact, they have to give money to the Don, the family, and in exchange, the Don gives the Capo political protection. Like Paulie in Goodfellas, who was in real-life a Caporegime in the Lucchese famiglia. He made his own money, trough associates like Jimmy the Gent and soldiers.
See, we can act as smart as we want, but at the end of the day, we still follow a guy who fucks himself with kebab skewers.

It is possibe to elevate from soldier to consiglieri or even acting boss in a short amount of time. It happened to Joe Miranda of the DeCavalcantes in Jersey. he was made in the 60's but only became capo in 2004 and a couple of months later he was promoted to acting boss. But actually there werent too many others left since the feds crippled most of the management of the family.

Raymondo, you're inferring "rules" or procedures that probably don't exist in the American Mafia. The reality is that the Don can do whatever he wants. Another reality is that there are no salaried positions in the Mob--everyone has to earn his own living, and to kick money upstairs to the Don. Chances are, a guy who becomes a consigliere has a crew or other organization of people earning for him just as he did before he was elevated. In a recent example, one of the tapes that helped convict John Gotti caught him saying to Sammy Da Bull: "Whaddya wanna be--underboss or consigliere--whaddever makes ya feel bedduh." Da Bull always had the same crew no matter what his role in the family. Some consiglieri were retired, or semi-retired, like Joseph N. Gallo of the Gambinos. Gotti moved him out quickly when he took over.
