Like I told in another post I hate the title "acting". I think the official boss should stop being one if he is in prison for life, as if he was dead. What do you think?

Jerry Capeci mentioned this in one of his columns. Most official bosses refuse to step down even when they are serving a life sentence. And it causes a power vacuum.
The last boss to step down was Lucchese-boss Tony Ducks Corallo.

Yes, but I think it is very important that a boss should be present, I don`t think it is worth an official boss behind the bars. If an official boss is in prison for life they should consider it as if he has died, a boss needs to be present and out of jail. What do you think?

This topic reminds of something I read somewhere that was talking about Nicky Scarfo, former Boss of the Philadelphia family. He got a life sentence, and it said that he at first tried to run things from prison, but that slowly deteriorated, and then a few years later he made an attempt to retake control of the family using outside supporters. It always baffled me exactly how an imprisoned man would attempt to undertake something like this.

This also brings up the question of how much say a jailed Boss has in deciding his measure of power within the family. I guess no Boss if going to want to just step down when they go away, but Im sure its happened, like Corallo. But if faced with a life sentence, wouldnt they realize that their days as professional criminals are basically over?

And to Don Pappo, I wanted to say that, even though on the street, someone may be the Boss of a family, there are a couple reasons why they still may be widely known as the acting boss...

1. The man in question may not want to draw extra attention from law enforcement by being seen as the official Boss. If he is still known as an Acting Boss, then this may divert some of the scrutiny away from his activities, may divert some of the violence that may be wished upon him from adversaries, and may be able to get him a lighter sentence if he ever goes to court, arguing that he was acting under the orders of others instead of running the show himself.

2. The newspapers and the media in general reporting all of this stuff may print someones name as an Acting Boss rather then an official Boss because if it is later revealed that their information was incorrect, its easier to blame the false info on mafia chaos and misinformation if the person was only labeled as an Acting Boss. Calling someone the official Boss of a family, setting it in stone, is pretty ballsy considering theres a high chance you could be incorrect, if not now then soon afterwards.
