by fathersson Christ give us a break
Christ man 22 0r 72 Assuming you mean Jesus Christ, I don't think he has anything to do with this, or cares if you're asking him to give us a break. In general, let's not lose sight that these people are basically good at one thing - baseball. Just because they are in the media spotlight doesn't mean they are good businessmen, politicians, humanitarians, rational, logical or even smart. There is a good share of illiterates, racists, egotists, and social deviates. Put them in a highly-charged situations and nothing should surprise us. Wow, what great entertainment. The game was pretty good too.

I got a good laugh this morning when someone on the radio commented that during yesterday's apology, Zimmer 'pulled a Johnny Fontaine' when he began crying like a baby!! Who would've thought a Godfather reference could come out of this mess!!! Onward with tonight's game.... AppleOnYa

by Apple Who would've thought a Godfather reference could come out of this mess!!! Can't you see Zim sitting on the edge of Torre's desk ala Fontaine Joe slapping him, "You can act like a man!" I wonder if Joe switched Mussina for tonight in order to put a calmer, non-combative pitcher on the mound? I wonder if the NY fans will give the Sox any sh*t on Tuesday?...probably not.

PSS - MaryCas, Tuesday's game will be played in Boston; the 'make-up' of the one that was rained out last night. So NY fans will have a chance to show their class (or lack thereof) in Game 6, if necessary.

Hi all..haven't posted in oh maybe 6 months but I had to go somewhere to vent my frustrations. I'm a cub fan through and through. Grew up 2 miles from Wrigley Field. Anyway, tonights game broke my heart. And in mourning a wrote a little poem that i'd like to share. Now i don't mean any harm to his poor unfortunate fan...i'm simply venting. So no one take it personal ok? (foul language ahead) Death to the Headphone Man
Dear Mr. Headphones, you stupid fucking prick. I hate you even more than I hate Robert Fick.
What were you thinking when you reached for that ball? Did you even think for a second...use any fucking sense at ALL?!!
He was right there to grab it, our good ole man Alou. But he missed that out, and you know why? All fucking thanks to you!!
It was Prior's game...he hadn't allowed a run. You shook him up bad, and ruined ALL the fun.
What followed was horrible, I can't even begin. They had to take out Prior, and put Farnsworth in.
Farnsworth thought he'd stop them, but our Farnsy was not right. He gave up 5 more stupid runs - I bet he'll lose sleep tonight.
Not only did you fuck our pitcher, but the fielders too. Alex Gonzalez missed a DP - what the HELL did he ever do to you?!
So thank you Mr. Headphones, for ruining our night... Don't ever show your face at Wrigley, unless you want to fight.
I can see the headlines clearly, in tomorrow's Chicago Tribune. "Headphone Man found dead, eyes gouged out with a spoon."
The only way you're still alive is for one fucking reason. Us Cub fans are believers, and we won't give up our season.
The fucking fish haven't got a chance in Heaven. With Kerry Wood on the mound, we'll win game seven.
Mark my words the Cubs will prevail - We've waited 95 years we will not fail.
GO CUBBIES!!

Boy, those Cubs should have had this series in the bag long ago, blowing another lead by allowing 8 runs in the eigth inning. The fan that interfered with Alou's catch will be banned from Chicago if the Cubs end up losing the series to the Marlins. It's all going down on Game 7, and I can't wait!
As far as the New York/Boston series goes, I feel that the Red Sox blew yet another prime opportunity to make it to the series. I'm not saying that I've given up on them, but they had a chance to have a good lead going back to New York. The rain delay really helped both clubs to cool off and reflect. This rivalry has been hot for about 2000 games! Security will probably remain high, but it shouldn't have to come to that in the first place. Anyway, the playoffs are still THE SHOW to watch these days.

I agree with you on the perspective issue, MaryCas. And you have a valid point on what constitutes a "pivotal point" in any given game. However, for better or worse, you gotta' remember some folks watch ball games to escape the harsh realities of life. I personally think it's a downright shame how much these players make, how much emphasis is given to sports in general, etc. On the other hand, I can relate to the outrage of Cubbies everywhere, albeit I think there should be a little maturity and restraint shown. But crap, I recall how I felt just last Saturday night when the Tennessee Vols gave the game to the Georgia Bulldogs in college football!!

There was no guarantee the Alou would have caught the ball and the Fish would not score. The cause and effect of that incident is totally unpredictable... Face it. Post-season baseball gets ALOT of attention. Always has and always will. It's one of the most exciting times of year, especially when it's your city's teams that are involved!! Anyway...I've always had a serious problem with fan interference and hope this jerk feels really guilty for turning the tide in what he probably thought was going to be a Cubs win. That aside, while the incident in itself may not have cause the 8-3 loss, it probably had a severe psychological effect on both teams. If you're the Cubs who were practically tasting the World Series, it literally pulled out the rug from underneath your feet. If you're the Marlins, who are described as a team that knows how to take advantage of a break and run with it...then you're going to gain momentum and come back from behind because you have to and there's no tomorrow if you don't. Same thing happened in 1986. The Sox were ONE strike away from taking it all. Mets got a break and something happened. It was simply amazing to watch. Even before the warranted Game 7 was played...the Sox had lost the World Series. They were spooked. Shellshocked. That's what happened because of that fan last night. He 'spooked' the Cubs. Apple

[QUOTE]Originally posted by MaryCas: I think this is media influenced, over-replay analysis. When these players are in the game (and the fans in the stands) are reacting to split-second, real-tine occurence. The play is over, and the game goes on. It can't believe that the players continue playing with "severe psychological effect". As the hits and runs mount up, yes, demoralizing for the Cubs and inspiring for the Marlins. But I can't believe the players dwell on one questionable play. [QUOTE]
You misunderstand the term 'spooked'. The media and replay analysis plays no role here, as the players had no access to any of that...they had to go on with the game, as you say. And while maybe they consciously certainly did NOT dwell on that one play...it in itself was demoralizing and had an effect on the remainder of the game.
Of course - if you just don't believe in that sort of thing...

Originally posted by J Geoff: Ugh. What a nightmare game. What are you talking about, man? The game was great....for Boston fans. It's amazing how home field advantage hasn't proved to be much of a deciding factor in this particular series. You could see a bunch of New Yorkers leaving Yankee Stadium after Trot Nixon just blasted the ball into South America in the ninth inning. That two-run shot just completely took the LIFE out of the crowd. What's even more amazing is that Game 7 will feature Pedro vs. Roger with the World Series at stake. This game promises to be a great one, and since I seem to be one of the only members here going for the Red Sox, I will take the heat from you guys either if they win or lose. I live for this!

Looks like the Cubbies are gonna screw it up. Sammy swinging (and missing) like he's gonna get 5 runs w/ no one on base, and Alou walking to first instead of hustling. Fuck that, that's terrible baseball. They don't deserve it. But I wanted them to win...

Great series! Nobody gave the Marlins a chance at all. The "Loveable Losers" may have another shot sometime. I feel bad for the fan cuz you know he feels as worse as the players, maybe more. I'm looking forward to the showdown tomorrow.
