And thank God, too! SAN FRANCISCO -- Terrell Owens is still under contract to the San Francisco 49ers after the star receiver apparently missed a deadline for voiding the rest of his contract.
Owens, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, didn't file the necessary paperwork quickly enough this week to become an unrestricted free agent, according to the NFL Management Council. Owens' agent, David Joseph, will file a grievance.
"We voided the contract. There's an issue now as to whether or not the void was effective," Joseph said.
Owens was among several players required to file by a new deadline, which recently was moved up 10 days for players who signed their contracts before the league's 2001 collective bargaining agreement went into effect.
Cleveland receiver Dennis Northcutt made a similar mistake. The Browns announced Thursday that Northcutt's agent failed to void the final three years of his contract by Feb. 19, keeping him with Cleveland.
By missing the deadline, Owens is under contract to San Francisco through 2006 -- and the 49ers get an unexpected bonus in what's shaping up to be a difficult offseason. The 49ers also released three veterans on Thursday: running back Garrison Hearst, offensive tackle Derrick Deese and defensive lineman Sean Moran.
"I have spoken to the NFL Management Council and they have confirmed that Terrell Owens will not be among the players listed as an unrestricted free agent," 49ers general manager Terry Donahue said.
The mix up doesn't necessarily mean Owens will play for the Niners next season. The team had expected to lose him in free agency for practically nothing, so San Francisco might use Owens' contract status to work out a trade.
Owens is due to make $17.7 million in base salary over the next three seasons, including $5.3 million next year -- a relative bargain for one of the NFL's best receivers.
He had been counting on a big payday in his first venture onto the free-agent market, hoping to land a signing bonus of more than $15 million from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Atlanta or a handful of other teams with the cap space to sign a star receiver.
Owens has spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the 49ers, who drafted him in the third round in 1996. He has been chosen to the last four Pro Bowls, but missed the game earlier this month with a broken collarbone.
Owens and Indianapolis' Marvin Harrison are the only receivers with more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns over the past four seasons. Owens had 80 catches for 1,102 yards and nine TDs last season -- his lowest totals since 1999.
Owens also has feuded with teammates, coaches, management and the media in recent seasons. While Owens spoke openly of his desire to move to another team in the offseason, the 49ers designated All-Pro linebacker Julian Peterson as their exclusive franchise player -- apparently conceding they wouldn't sign Owens. And good thing, too. If we lost Owens... Says he may not even play, though. What's up with that?

I think the first order of business for T.O. will be to fire his agent. That is, if the guy doesn't kill himself first.

Lots of discussion in the Niner community. Those who wanted Jeff's head on a platter for a losing season got their wish while others loyal to the team feel he was a scapegoat. As a lifelong Niner fan, I personally feel it was time for him to go. I have been watching Tim Rattay since his college days at LA tech and I think he is fresh, raw talent. Niners also have a very capable backup in Dorsey. My dream plan? For these two QB's to stay healthy all year, find a way to keep Owens (yep, I like him!) drop Zack Bronson and the NUMBER ONE priority - KEEPING JULIAN PETERSON - the Niners may not be Super Bowl bound for a while, but at least on the upswing. Good luck to Garcia wherever he gets picked up (Baltimore? San Diego? no, NOT DETROIT like some people think! ). I am a Niner fan that can't forget what good he DID DO for the team. It's just time to move on.

ooops! Did I say yesterday Baltimore might be looking for a QB and sniffing around Garcia? Um, guess not since T.O. is going to be a Raven now. Ugh! Only good thing is maybe San Fran can draft 3 good picks (do you suppose?) I cried when big Joe left. I cried when Steve Young was done. I even cried when Seattle took old Turkey neck Merton Hanks. My eyes are dry now. But I think I might be planning a trip this year to Baltimore to see my pal Bethie. Just for old time's sake. Goodbye T.O. Hope you have as much success as Jerry Rice has had with the Raider Faders! See ya in the Fall! Anthony: Think Rattay-Barlow-Lloyd-PETERSON....make it your mantra!

I got home and heard on the news about The Ravens getting T.O. My first thought I had going through my mind was, "Don't hate me Buffster cause I'm a Baltimoron". :p Then I figured if a man hasn't come between us yet, they ain't gonna. Come to "The City that Bleeds", Buffy. We'll visit the Purple Palace and go to the Harbor for a crabcake. And I don't mean me.!

Tell Boller to work on that arm. I anxiously await to see how the dynamics of this new (old)kid on the block Owens pans out and how well he plays with the others. How 'bout them COWWWWWBOYSSSSSS? They have to deal with Keyshawn and his ego! [/b][/quote]About 20 years ago our Mayor nicknamed Baltimore, "The City That Reads", promoting the libraries. With the murder rate the townspeople gave it a more proper nickname. The Purple Palace is the nickname for M&T Stadium, because it looks like Barney threw up there. Sorry, it's the not the name of a male strip club. I just hope T.O. doesn't get lonely out there considering Kyle Boller can't throw for shit. I still think Kyle and Scott Wolf were separated at birth.

Now that we are talking football, I got thinking the other day about next years toughest divisions.
You could definetly make a strong case that the NFC East which was arguably the weakest division 2 years ago, is now the toughest division. The Eagles are still amazing and the adition of Kearse should help their already stellar defense. The Redskins are undoubtly this years super star hungry money spending team, as they were last year. Portis should revolutionize their offense. The loss of Bailey while big, will probably be minor thanks to the adition of Springs. The Cowboys will be great, and it really pains me to say it too. What Parcells did in one year was phenominal. What he will do in year 2 will be even more amazing. Chances are that Keyshawn will go to the Cowboys and before you count that showboat out, remember that Parcells was the only coach which he really shined under. The cowboys will be a force to be reckoned with. Now its anyones guess with the Giants. They could be terrible like this last season, and they could be great. I hope its the latter, and I think it will be too. While they havent made virtually any deals yet, I think they will do well in the draft, and the talent already on the team should make them an elite team.
You could argue that the top dog is the AFC central, but I think that the NFC East is this coming seasons new top dog.

Although from my perspective the jury is still out on whether we should go after Keyshawn Johnson, and his ego which unfortunatly comes with him. I heard though that the cowboys may give up a late draft pick to Tampa Bay in return for KJ. That I might be able to live with. But like someone already mentioned Bill Parcells is one tough no-nonsense coach, who's very capable of handling KJ
