Maybe now people will get the message that steroids arent worth it!

Hopefully a day of reckoning occurs finally in baseball over the steroids.

Then again, nothing has happened about Roids and its massive use in pro wrestling, despite about 10 wrestlers dying from heavy roid use on average per year.

Wow, I can't believe that. Did they say what ultimately killed him? How old was he??

Apparently he recently tested positive for cocaine use, too.

Caminiti's death, at least at this point, is attributed to a heart attack. What caused a 41 year-old man to suffer a heart attack would be a better question.

NiceGuyEddie, the answer is "no" they won't get the message.

Lyle Alzado and John Matuszak are both dead from cancer attributed to steroid use. Isn't that enough of a message? Apparently not. Why? Because both played in the NFL...and if steroids are what it took to get there, people were willing to do it. And if that guy is doing it, I need to do it to stay even with him. And the next guy will do it to stay even with me.

Arguably, the NFL has more stringent rules for testing and a longer list of prohibited substances compared to other professional sports. So what happens? They look for new or different substances that are not on the list, or not tested, or unable to be detected!

I did a college term paper 20 years ago on the use of steroids in sports. I don't recall the exact source for this one piece of information (it might have been Dr. Bob Goldman's book "Death in the Locker Room"), but athletes were asked if they could take a performance enhancing drug or supplement that would help them become a world class athlete, would they do it even if the long term risks might include a premature death.

The answer was overwhelmingly yes.

(Bad me for not recalling the exact source or the exact question, but the information is accurate.)

I'll bet if you asked the question today, most athletes would still say yes regardless of how you phrased it. In the mind of the athlete striving to be NFL caliber, Olympic caliber, MLB caliber, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

This is indeed difficult to grasp, especially for Padres fans like me. Caminiti was above all things a great person to all of his teammates and family alike. He was on the verge of signing with the Padres as a hitting coach for the upcoming season shortly before his death. It's also going to be extremely difficult for players on the Houston Astros (Bagwell, Biggio, and Ausmus) to play after losing such a dear friend. Age 41 is way too young to die. What a shame indeed. Rest In Peace Ken Caminiti....we love you big guy.

The image I'll always have of Ken Caminiti is this: throwing while on his butt, from third base to first, a perfect rope to nail a runner. Not some lolly pop, rainbow throw. This was a dart and one of the best plays that I have ever seen.

It's too bad he was unable to overcome his addictions. One hell of a player.

I was always impressed when he would throw guys out at first while sitting on his butt.

Fox Sports is reporting this morning that "that was no heart attack".

A preliminary autopsy is indicating a drug overdose.

Unconfirmed sources claim Willie Cicci broke that news.

The report also said that he was found dead in a, um, "Bronx apartment"

I guess he was in town for the LCS and wanted to be near Yankee Stadium.
