I'm new to the board (obviously) and have just watched the DVD collection for the fourth time since Christmas. I'm addicted.

My husband and I were watching part II again last night when he realized a blooper...

During the senate hearing, Michael says he received the Navy Cross. In Part I and in the flashback scene in part II, he mentions he was a marine.

Also during the flashback scene at the end of part II, Sonny mentions Michael going to Furman. I vaguely remember Michael going to Dartmouth.

Can anyone clarify these bloopers?

We need a military man to provide better detail, but it's my understanding that the Navy is a sub-division of the Marines. So it may be possible that U.S. Marine Michael Corleone could've been awarded a Navy Cross.

Right track, Apple! Marines are a subdivision of the Navy, so the Navy Cross was appropriate. Dartmouth, I believe, appeared only in the novel.
Another anomaly in the Senate hearing scene: The senator asks Michael if he was responsible for the murders of the heads of the Five Families in 1950. That scene actually occurred in 1955 (Vito's headstone, Clemenza's '55 Cad and other cars). Still another anomaly: Hagen tells Michael he's opened himself to "five counts of perjury." Since the Five Families massacre occurred in '55, not '50, Michael didn't lie when he answered no to the senator's question--so he only perjured himself four times! And yes, Sonny sure did pull his punches in the fight scene with Carlo. I guess, unlike Michael, he really didn't want to make his sister a widow.

Dartmouth eh? Named after a Cornish (British) town/moor...

Anyway, we need a military guru to look at the deleted scene from GF1, where Vito goes to the hospital to see Genco, and we get a close up of Michael's medals... If there a Navy Cross there?

As for this part, it's a common one. Tom Hagen actually says "Pop had to pull a lot of strings to get you a deferment" then Michael says "I didn't ask for a deferment -- and I didn't want it. "

Thanks for clearing that one up for me. But I'm not understanding how a Marine can be issued a Navy Cross... even if the Navy is a subsidiary of the Marines. Can someone explain?

Trish: Here's an excerpt from a website I found searching for "Navy Cross":
"The United States, with the Medal of Honor as its sole decoration, was caught unprepared not only for this custom [decorating soldiers for heroism in international wars], but also had no appropriate award to recognize heroism of a level less than that which would merit the Medal of Honor and no decoration to reward the myriad acts of meritorious non-combat service that the war would spur. The U.S. Army shared this dilemma and with the aid of President Woodrow Wilson and the Congress in early and mid-1918 instituted its Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) with clear guidelines for the award of the Distinguished Service Cross for combat heroism and the DSM award for distinguished non-combat duty in a position of great responsibility. This pair was available in time for awarding during World War I. Parallel awards were created a year later [the Navy Cross] for the Navy and Marine Corps, months after the armistice and amid the massive demobilization of our forces."
Marines are part of the Navy, and, among other duties, provide security on warships.

Hi there. Just a sidenote on Crosses. i am active duty and each service has it's on Cross for Bravery. The airforce has it's own, (af cross) the Army (distinguished service cross). And of course the Navy Cross (authorized to be awarded to members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard). Each service has it's own variety of medal specific to the action/incident.

I pointed this out in a prior thread, but it's relevant here again....

In the family tree, select Michael. It claims he made his bones by gunning down Sollozzo and McCluskey in a Brooklyn restaurant. That's not right. It occurred at :

"Loui's restaurant in the Bronx"..... According to Sonny, after receiving the phone call from "my man in McCluskey's precinct"

Dartmouth makes sense to me. Remember Kay was from New Hampshire and there are several mentions of visiting her folks in the Granite State. Anyway, isn't Furman in the south? Atlanta? right?

Yes, Furman U. is in Greenville, SC.

It's not Furman, he says deferrment. I don't think they mention where Michael went to college, but the novel does say Dartmouth. Remember Sonny saying that he has to shoot them up close and get their brains all over your Ivy League suit.

This statement is WRONG.

The Marines and Navy are different services whose top officers belong to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Marines have Generals, the Navy has Admirals.

Another blooper I could see was when Batista resigned, and the people were causing damages in the streets, there is a guy hitting at some stuff in the street... and the he suddenly fells to the floor !!!!

Also at the same time, there is a black spot in the screen, what is that!?!?!?

Actually, Salvatore, what you're seeing is a highly accurate depiction of what happened in Havana following Batista's defection. Mobs of pro-Castro Habaneros trashed the casinos, believing them to be symbols of US Mafia-dominated imperialism. (The only casino that was spared was the Capri, where US gangster actor George Raft was the official "greeter." The guy who fell down in the scene you cited was one of many attacking parking meters with baseball bats. That really happened. Batista promised that the revenues from parking meters would go to a children's hospital, but they went instead to the pockets of his brother in law.
