The "Hitman" was a terrific fighter in his prime.
The first round of his first fight with Marvin Hagler was possibly the greatest three minutes of boxing ever. It was certainly the greatest three minutes I've ever seen, and although I've pretty much given up on the "sport" since Muhammed Ali's retirement, I've been watching fights since 1960.
As I recall, though, Hearns was totally washed up by the time of his last fight, and seemed to be a little punch drunk besides. What idiotic boxing commission licensed him to fight again?
I hope he doesn't get hurt.

I think it's the same for most sports people and especially those who were extremely good at it. I would compare it a drug addiction. Imagine doing one thing great most of your life, being a fan favourite and performing infront of thousands and thousands of people regularly and then to suddenly stop. That feeling is irreplacable and many sports stars aren't prepared for life outside of sports. The same could even be said about the Rolling Stones and I bet that's the reason they carry on. Yogi - You seen ITV have the Junior Witter fight? I don't think they've shown boxing for over 10 years.

It's all good tho You didn't happen to watch the incredible boring fights did you and I purposely stayed in to watch them. Absolute sham. I've seen both fighters fight before and have been highly impressive. Well done to ITV for getting the fight but then showing it on ITV2. I nearly missed it because when I saw it wasn't on ITV I thought I must have my dates mixed up but then luckily I stumbled across it on ITV2 minutes before the first fight. And the commentary was terrible, absolutely disgusting. The Skelton/Williams fight will be watched on mute I think. The Witter fight was a joke. Witter should have been making a mark and proving he deserves a go at the top people of the Welterweight division. He was completely frustrating switching stances and trying new things. He's a guy that believes his own hype and is trying to esablish himself as a legend first with his 'unique' (I use the term loosely because it's completely forced) style. Cotto, Mayweather, Hatten etc would eat him alive. He says 9 months until he gets a shot at those guys and he would have knocked out Tszyu. I can't see him doing it in the next 2 years at least. And Carl Froch, the supposedly 'Hottest prospect in Boxing', also had a lacklustre performance. He's another not ready for the top guys in his division.
