I have never read the novel so it may say something in there about this. How does everyone know that young vito killed fanucci?

Everyone in that neighborhood was a Sicilian. Sicilians know that kind of stuff.

One of the great things of having new posters, is that that sometimes bring fresh questions and comments to the board, such as this one. We as viewers know he did it, but how did the information leak out?

the reason everyone knew vito killed him was fannuci all of a sudden disappeared and now vito was in conrtol of the neighborhood.

But who was to say Vito was now in control of the neighborhood? Why would they respect and fear him if they didnt know (or at least think) he took care of Fanucci?

If you remember, Vito had a public meeting with Fanucci in regards to paying him off...."wet my beak..."


The way I see it, people in the neighborhood saw the two men together and if you've ever lived in a community that was so self contained as theirs was, everyone knew everyone else's business, especially as it pertained to the man who ran that section of town.

The local paisan knew Vito owed Fanucci, saw the two in the coffee shop. Although everybody saw Fanucci walking home, he was found dead later that day. 2+2=4.

They certainly knew Fanucci was killed--he stopped collecting from them, and no doubt the police found his body and a crowd saw it taken away. When Vito showed up and started "protecting" the businesses that Fanucci had "protected" previously, they put two and two together.

We also know that Sonny saw it happen. Maybe he leaked out to friends etc.

As usual you put in the missing piece . Couple of follow up questions.
-Why did Vito take over Fannuci's "business"? I am under the assumption that he whacked him, because he was trying to extort money from him, and this was in effect "taking food off his familys table". I don't think he did it to move up the pecking order.
-How long after the assasination, did he wait to start collecting? Did he do with or without Clemenza and Tessio [dont forget the novel when answering these ]
-How come Roberto, a prosperous landlord [he did dress nice ] didn't know about Don Vito?
