You can define "greatest" any way you'd like. Which event (any sport) that you attended live stands out the most and why? Was it the Superbowl? A college bowl game? A regular season game with playoff implications? A game that had a memorable individual performance? Personal significance (e.g. first game ever attended)? Was the result (good or bad) a factor in why you remember it? For me, it was a Bulls home game against the Cavs back in the 1994-1995 season. Not only was it my first Bulls game ever, but it was also during Michael Jordan's first come back (when he was wearing #45). The electricity in the crowd was magic, Michael played well (his play was up and down up until then) and the Bulls won the game. I'm sure Goombah remembers the game with the same fondness.

Tuesday, October 16th 1990, Riverfront Stadium. I was a mere 9 years old but I remember being at Game 1 of the World Series between the Reds and A's. I still remember the erruption of the crowd when Eric Davis hit a blast to center field. And all the strangers I high fived. Turned out that was all the runs the Red's needed with Rijo's 7 innings of shutout baseball.
Business bad? Fuck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? Fuck you, pay me. Place got hit by lightning huh? Fuck you, pay me.

I have to really give this one some thought before posting the greatest sporting event that I ever attended. I'll be back!
Ok, after giving this some thought, I have to say that the greatest sporting event that I ever attended was the January 14th 2001 NFC Championship game between the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. All the so called experts said that the Giants didn't have a prayer in beating Dante Culpepper and company. HAAAAA! I remember that we never even got a chance to actually sit down in our seats throughout the whole first half. The Giants came out like wild fire and scored on their first drive. In all my years of going to hockey games, baseball games and football games, I've never experienced a game like this game. The crowd was on their feet and cheering so loud from the opening kickoff that you could actually feel the stadium vibrating. It was a sureal experience. I believe that even the Viking players were in awe at how loud the stadium was that day. Culpepper couldn't even get his plays off because his offense could not hear the calls being made by him. He looked completely lost out there that day. The Giant D was all over him on almost every play. Big Blue went on to win that game 41 - 0. Don Cardi
Don Cardi Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.

The "greatest" baseball game I ever attended was probably the 3rd game of the Yankees 1967 season. The Red Sox came into town (I recall that it was a Friday afternoon game in early April) and a bunch of my friends and I cut school to go the game. This was back when the Yankees really sucked and the Sox weren't much better, so the crowd was very small. A young rookie pitcher named Bill Rohr was starting his first major league game and he no-hit the Yanks for 8-2/3 innings. Yankee cacher, Elston Howard, came up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to get the Yankees' only hit Rohr retired the next batter to finish with a one-hitter and the victory. Elston Howard was traded to the Sox later on in that season, and the Sox ended up winning the A.L. pennant despite the odds of 100-1 against them doing so. One lousy out away from seeing a no-hitter!

Try this, rookies. June 17, 2000. New York Yankees versus the Atlanta Braves. Starting pitchers: Roger Clemens vs Greg Maddox. 10 Career Cy Young awards COMBINED. Funny enough, both were rocked out of the game by the 4th inning.

I saw Game 3 of the '83 Series between the Orioles and Phillies that featured a pitching match up of Hall of Famers Steve Carlton and Jim Palmer (although Palmer entered the game early as a relever as he was at the end of his career).
The game included future Hall of Famers Mike Scmidt, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez and Eddie Murray, as well as a soon to be member, Cal Ripken, and a would be HOFer, Pete Rose.
Homers by Morgan and Garry Matthews gave the Phils a 2-0 lead. Disco Dan Ford tied it with a two-run homer, and an error led to the winning run by the Orioles, who went on sadly to win the Series in 5.

1995 Divisonal Series
Yankees Mariners
Jimmy Leritz walkoff home run in I think the twelve inning.
Also Donny Baseball hit one ealier in the game that created the loundess sound I ever heard at an event of any kind. If Yankee stadium had a roof it would have been blown off
"Francis can I have a momment"

October, 1993. Veterans Stadium, Phl.
The Phillies won the NL East after finishing in last place the year before. They finished off the Braves and Greg Maddux, who had stormed past the Giants to win the West, in Game 6 of the NL Championship.
I never saw a stadium erupt with such enthusiasm. That was my moment. October 23, 1993, I was six years old and my parents got tickets to game six between Philly and Toronto and JOE CARTER hit the home run and Skydome went nuts and Mitch Williams never pitched again.

A couple of highlights from my youth:
1981 MLB All-Star Game. This was the 1st game back for MLB after a bitter strike. My dad, born in Canada, was elated to watch Montreal's Gary Carter hit 2 homeruns.
1979 Browns win over Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Got to see Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Too Tall Jones, et al.
1989 Browns maul the Chicago Bears on MNF as Bernie Kosar hits Webster Slaughter on 97 yard TD after the Browns defense stuffed Chicago on a 4th and goal.
June 3rd or 4th 1995: Indians came back from 8-0 deficit vs. David Cone/Toronto Blue Jays. Paul Sorrento hit a 3 run, 2 out HR in the 9th inning in one in long list of comeback wins from a magical Indians season.

I remember that 1981 game vividly. The National League continued its domination and won 5-4. Carter hit 2homers, but it was Ohioan, Mike Schmidt, who hit the two-run homer off Rollie Fingers to put the NL ahead to stay in the eighth.
