I'm in a local gym (Freedom Fitness) daily. Like every gym, they have music playing constantly, but evidently they must subscribe to Sirius's equivalent of the "MTV 1985" channel. Every day: Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, VanHalen, Iron Maiden, Ozzie, Judas Priest, Billy Joel, Yngwe, Cheap Trick--every hair band my son used to listen to when he was an adolescent. We bought our first VCR around then, and I got cable mainly because MTV was showing the most creative video at that time. My son would come home from junior high or high school, put on MTV, record some particularly good video, then cue it up for me when I came home from work. Great bonding experience! The gym is helping me to relive some pearly moments.

TB,

I look at that period for me personally anyway, as the last of the really "good" era for rock music. The debut of the music video was wonderful and new and much of the music and videos very inventive.

I made sure when I got cable that I got "My MTV". The family would enjoy sitting and watching videos. My two pre-teen daughters were all caught up in "Madonna" and even entered a video contest that MTV was sponsoring.

It's funny how music can bring to mind a certain "era" of your life and bring you right back to memories that seem clear as a bell.

1985...ahh what a year. My daughter was born. The music then was great. And my daughter actually listens to some music I used to. Of course, today's music I couldn't tell you one lyric.

I agree with SB. I'm impressed you go to the gym everyday. I barely have the energy to get out of bed everyday.

1985 is a year that sticks out for me. I started my senior year in college and met the girl, whom I later married. I think Born in the USA was a big album that year, and my favorite song that year had to be Money for Nothing.

Well, I go just about every day also and pump iron. They play today's crap music and there are TVs everywhere. I used to go to the gym to work out ... just work out. Now I have to put up with all the ambient noise. Another thing I can't understand is these goofballs at the gym supposedly working out but on cellphones. Especially the guys - seems like an effeminate thing to do.

Ahhh... 1985.

My divorce became final at the beginning of the year and I started driving a taxi in the burgeoning corporate car service in the City. The industry had a trade paper (called "Black Car News") and another new driver would go on to write a monthly column in it. His name? Paul Lawrence.

I have that here, too, olivant. And another beef: people who work out with Ipods glued into their ears--and sing along atonally with whatever they're listening to.

SC - Really?? That's amazing. I knew that Paul worked in the car service industry, but how teeny-tiny a world it is!

TB - 1985 was the year that I got engaged. I was once asked "If you could relive any year of your life, which one would it be?". That is the year I picked. I mean, you get tons of presents, you pick the most beautiful garment you will ever wear, you get a big ol diamond, you're the center of attention at the biggest party you will ever throw yourself, what's not to want to relive?? Oh, and something about starting a new life with the man of your dreams...

Yea, but some things never change. Years later, us ladies still like the party, gifts, and diamonds, but not necessarily a husband.

I still lived in Orange County. I finished 6th grade and started Jr. High that fall. 1985 ruled.

I was but six yrs old in 1985 but I still remember it like it was yesterday. My thoughts of those days are filled with Ronald Reagan, the 84 Olympics in LA, and MTV! It felt like a 'Lutheran' type enlightenment indeed.

BTW TB, good luck with your workouts! I hope it is a habit for you.

Some events of 1985 involved the introduction of New Coke, which briefly replaced Coca-Cola, and Live-Aid. I believe Orson Welles and Rock Hudson died in close proximity of each other also.

In 1985, although we were still in the middle of war with Iraq and it was very dangerous to fly over Persian Gulf, we took a vacation to Dubai, UAE, and there we bought our first PC. It was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128k made in GB. It had only 128kb of memory in contrast with at least 256Mb for today's computers. It was doing some impressive things and had great graphic for its time too. Sweet times even though we were still in the middle of the war.

1985? I cannot think of something in particular. Oh, sure, 80s were my golden years. I was young and pretty. And had great expectations. I was a teacher then. Most popular and good to boot. Pupils loved me. I think they are in their thirties now....Shit.

Let's see...on this day in 1985, I was...only 16 days old.

I was a bit older but still in HS myself. Those were the Golden Years of MTV, and a few years after, long before TRL ruined modern music for a generation (Britney Spears and other fake garbage) and MTV became the crappy reality show network it is now.
OK, despite my commentary, thanks for the flashbacks, everyone.

I remember the 1985 well. Bruce Springsteen was probably the biggest name in music at the time, along with Michael Jackson, Prince & Madonna. Not to mention the spectacular Live Aid concert.

Joe Montana defeated Dan Marino in the Super Bowl. The KC Royals defeated St. Louis in the World Series and the LA Lakers with Magic & Kareem beat Bird & McHale's Celtics.

Let's see what else: boxing was still a cool sport, no cell phones (very cool), cd players were just becoming popular.

Two of the more popular movies that year were Back to the Future and Rambo First Blood Part II.

"Miami Vice" was in its first or second season and very popular when I was a teen back then.

I think Orson rolled over in his sleep.
