Can you guys (well maybe you older guys & gals) believe it's been forty years today since Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band was released? I remember how totally different it was at the time. Oh, and the album cover was unique and quite a topic of conversation. As the article states Mae West first declined to be in a "Lonely Heart's Club" until the Beatles wrote her and she finally agreed to it along with Fred Astaire, Karl Marx and many others. It was fun trying to recognize everyone on the cover. On my long ride home from work today they were discussing it on NPR station, with a couple former DJ's who recalled that they couldn't play some of the tracks on AM radio, and many of the songs were played on "underground" (FM) radio stations, due to what was thought to be drug references. All good songs, but my personal favorites: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, She's Leaving Home, When I'm Sixty-Four....but my absolute favorite from the album and one of my all time favorite songs is "A Day In The Life". (and it's educational too,"now I know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall" 1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 2. With A Little Help From My Friends 3. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 4. Getting Better 5. Fixing A Hole 6. She's Leaving Home 7. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! 8. Within You Without You 9. When I'm Sixty-Four 10. Lovely Rita 11. Good Morning Good Morning 12. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) 13. A Day In The Life http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070531/music_nm/arts_pepper_dc

Can you guys (well maybe you older guys & gals) believe it's been forty years today since Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band was released? Hard to believe, huh?? I remember seeing the album cover for the first time.... I was 16 and thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw. I amazed my friends by being able to name most of the people on the cover. The wonderful music inside was just icing on the cake!

Hey TIS, did you ever see the movie? It was pretty bad. A friend of mine has the soundtrack sitting in his garage, in the box full of records he's to embarrassed to admit he owns/mix in with the rest of his records. Sgt. Peppers is probably my favorite Beatles album though... If not this album, then Magical Mystery Tour. It's great that something like this can still connect to people, four decades later, and in some cases, two or more generations later. All of the songs TIS mentioned are excellent... Among them, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds being the best; but I've always been a sucker for the title track and A Day in the Life as well.
"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

Mig, I never did see the movie. I really don't remember if it did well at the box office or not, but I didn't see it because I had heard it wasn't that good. (surprising because it had some good performers). I learned yesterday listening to the news show about Sgt. Pepper, that "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" lyrics was taken from a poster for some kind of circus or carnival. And, although I'm sure I knew this at the time, but Lucy in the Sky's drug reference was partly the anagram (LSD) FWIW: The only song I can say I am not crazy about is "Good Morning". Also, Sgt. Pepper song introduces "A Day In The Life" as well as being a single track. Everytime that played I never was sure if it was a Day In The Life or not. If I recall, the way I could tell is if the last line of SP was "Let me introduce to you the one and only Billy Shears (?). Or maybe it was the other way around. TIS

In the paper yesterday there was an article saying that there are only 6 people on the cover who are still alive! I could'nt work it out! Hmm, interesting. I'd have to see a close-up of the cover to see if I could figure it out. I knew most of the people if I recall, but couldn't tell you what six are still alive. It'd be fun to check out again though. Other than the people mentioned in the article I posted, that refused and then decided to agree to be on the oover, werent' there a few that were asked and didn't appear? Seems funny that you'd need permission to have a picture on an album cover. TIS

Do you have the album cover right next to you or something? I was searching for a big close-up to figure it out. Click on the link (below) and then click on the picture (when it opens) to magnify it. ALBUM COVER I wish I still had my album.... I gave it to my niece (when she was a little kid --- she LOVED the Beatles).

Thanks SC! There are quite a few that I don't recognize. I thought I'd know more of them. Among them, who's the guy with the shades and who's the one behind Ringo (partial view)? TIS

Thanks SC! I don't know Terry Southern, but Johnny Weissmuller, I definitely know (my favorite Tarzan). Is the woman in the gown Marylin Monroe? Doesn't look like her if so. Do you know all of them???? TIS

Nice find Cheeks Lombardi!! I see it's dated "1843?? It's amazing where song writers find inspiration isn't it? Another little known fact about Sgt. Pepper I just read. It was the first album to include printed song lyrics. TIS

Good story - had to go to Autozone yesterday, and my truck had the windows rolled down. There was an Edsel (classic) with its radio on, playing Within You Without You, and I turned my radio to the same station, and eventually the whole first row of cars at AZ had the same station on, blasting the song (and the rest of the album, which they were repeating throughout the day). Fun times at Autozone.
