Since the Corleone family was riddled with incompetents(Sunny),traitors(Carlo,Paulie,Tessio),bisexuals(Fredo)and poor dressers(Clemenza,Johnnie Ole)should they have looked outside their circle for talent.

Why not go to the bullpen and recruit someone like Merle. He was a good dresser,well traveled and never shown to be a wife beater like Carlo.He was certainly in need of employment and could have taken very easily to the palatial accommedations at Rancho Cosa Nostra.

Merle was a freeloader, marrying Connie for her family name and her money. He was also probably a con artist pulling small scams or a pimp, in which case he had a lot of smalltime enemies and needed the protection of the Corleone Family.

He was dumb, and I had the impression that you needed some brains to become a made man in the Corleone family.

Sonny was incompetent? What makes you say that? He was far from incompetent. Just because Vito makes a reference to him as being a bad Don, it did not mean that he was an incompetent Don. His temper, which clouded his judgment is what Vito was making reference to. Not his competency. There is a difference. I suggest that you read the book if you haven't already done so.

( Merle was the horrible dresser, by the way ) Johnnie Ola, was, yes, a horrible dresser, and wasn't even in The Corleone Family. In The Godfather Films, if that's what you're talking about, Fredo's sexuality was never mentioned, but if you are talking about GFR that's a whole other turd sandwich... Merle Johnson was merely a bad-dressing free loader, he would NEVER be in The Corleone Family. Plus as DE NIRO said, he was only in the film for like 5 minutes. But don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with you on everything in this post.

Henry, the family did go outside of blood relatives. Michael had Rocco and Neri as two of his top aides. Merle was a gold digger who was marrying Connie for her money. He was an absolute moron who could not even speak for himself.

Merle also told Michael he was going to marry Constanzia. Santino's daughter's fiancee asked for permission from Michael before marrying her. This annoyed Michael.

Actually Merle asked for a drink and he got no response, so Connie had to ask for it. I think maybe that grabbing Connie's hand during the money grubbing session was a turn off to Mike, After all, Mike didn't know this Merle, he didn't know what he lived on, but he knew that if Connie told him marriage was out of the question, he'd understand.

What about Fredo?

Was Fredo a made man? I don't remember ever reading or hearing that.

Frederico did not have a 'position' within the Corleone family. The chain of command seen in The Godfather Part II is incorrect. It was a list of what investigators thought was the Corleone family's chain of command.

There has been a lot of speculation about this issue. I think Fredo may have had some kind of title within the family, but he had no real power. When Michael leaves Nevada for Miami, New York and Havana, he makes a reference to "Fredo and his men." Also Fredo operated the house of ill repute that Sen. Geary frequented. Of course Fredo knew that despite whatever title he may have had that all he really did was go and pick people up at the airport, or go run some Mickey Mouse nightclub somewhere, because he was smart, not dumb, like everyone says, he was smart...SMART! and he wanted respect, and something in it for him...fir HIM...even though Mike always took care of him, after all Mike was his kid brother, did he ever think about that? He was passed over cause thats the way pop wanted it, but it wasnt the way Fredo wanted it!

Now you've mentioned it, does anyone (hint to Turnbull ) has a clue what the actual chain of command was, before and after the death of Vito Corleone.

I think before the death it was of course Vito(don), Sonny(underboss), Tom (consiglieri), Clemenza and Tessio (caporegime).
After it would be Micheal(don), Hagen (not sure, but he had to be either consilgieri or underboss, becuase Micheal made him Don while he left), Al and Rocco were the Capos
