Been wondering about this for some time -- what exactly is Michael's accent? I have heard that it's a NY/Italian accent however being a non-American I can't be certain. I've also noticed that Tom Hagen has a slightly different accent than Michael's. Strange how Mama Corleone's accent sounded more NY than Italian. Anyone cares to explain? Thanks. tongue

Edit: did anyone notice that in GFIII Michael's accent has changed? Why is that? frown

Pacino has a Bronx accent, mama sounds more like Brooklyn. Robert Duvall is not a native New Yorker, so he probably used a voice coach to develop a sort of New York accent. Brando improvised his, no doubt, some Italian and some New York.

I don't know that Michael's accent changed so much as his voice. Someone can enlighten me here, but I think he was very sick and got that gravelly voice at some point in his life. With the voice change, his diction is more clipped, so it sounds like a different accent, but I don't think it is.

I agree. It's not his accent that changed. Rather, it's his voice. He's gotten older during the tenure of he Trilogy so his voice will change.

Al Pacino was a smoker so when you smoke for 20 years years im sure it affects your voice so that must have something to do with it..

Pacino's voice changed around 1988 (I know it's the late 80's) due to surgery from throat cancer - caused by smoking too much. He switched to herbal cigarettes, but, I think, eventually quit altogether.
