And before I seem too evil for laughing at this commercial, let me say that I actually wouldn't mind having a Jitterbug. I've led this rally against hi-tech cell phones among my peers, claiming that the Jitterbug is simple, efficient, and perfect for all their needs. They are disgusted by it, so I once even went so far as to create "testimonials" to display in my room - I put each of their pictures with a caption from the commercial, such as "Bigger buttons, bigger numbers, who needs glasses?" It's mostly a joke against them, but I have a very low understanding of my own cell phone, so I like to think I'm more fit for a Jitterbug.

The Aflac commercials are great! My favorites are "There's Only One" and, of course, "Berra at the Barber". (I had no idea they had some Japanese ones! They don't seem to fit the same mold, though).

It's not that I don't know what the intentions were - I can imagine other people finding it funny - but I just can't seem to find it humorous.

I laugh at the Cialis commercial that says if you stay hard for more than 4 hour you should go to the doctor. Hell, if that were me I'd be bragging to my friends.

Yeah, I can just picture going to the doctor with that complaint. Imagine the scene in the waiting room...

The wittiest US TV commercials ever were put on by Volkswagen in the early Sixties. They poked fun at the humble Beetle while subtly extolling its virtues. My favorite:

A moonlit Maine snowscape. No voiceover, no music. Guy opens his garage door, starts up his Beetle, pulls out into heavy drifts. Plows through the drifts, with just the moonlight and the sound of the engine to keep him company. After a while, he pulls up by a big garage. Sound of diesel engine starting, door opens--and a snowplow pulls out.

Finally, the voiceover: "Did you ever wonder how the man who drives the snowplow gets to the snowplow?"

I think VW was one of the first major campaigns that mocked its own product. As I recall there were also some clever magazine ads connected with that campaign.

Speaking of clever ads in the 60's I always liked the Hertz ad where the guy flies into the driver's seat, and I see not they've brought it back.

That "mockery" had an underlying snob appeal. In the era when many Americans were revolted by "conspicuous consumption" exemplified by US cars with huge tail fins and giant V8 engines, owning a VW was a way to make a statement that you were a "nonconformist" and were hip to the superiority of European products.

Car-crazy kids like me paid a lot of attention to that Hertz ad ("Let Hertz...put you-u-u-u-u...in the driver's seat!"). The car they showed was a '59 Chevy Impala ragtop. The front edge of the hood had a chrome "V" with a pair of crossed racing flags above it--indicating that it had the 348-cubic-inch "big block" V8, Chevy's most powerful engine for that year. That got us excited: imagine, we (more likely our parents) could rent a real high-performance car without having to buy one! Fat chance, though: the standard Hertz Chevy rental was the lower-end BelAir or Biscayne, with the dull, "Stovebolt Six" engine and two-speed Powerglide transmission.

That Hertz campaign led to one almost as good by Avis mocking themselves for bein number two and convincing us that "We Try Harder"

Maybe not, DT. I recall in the novel that the family had business interests in Miami. Wasn't Neri sent to a Family hotel in Miami as a reward towards the end of the book? I think so.

Anyway, if the Family owned a hotel or other small business down there, the car could easily have been registered to one of them.

Good analysis, PB. But I'm betting that the car Michael was driving was an Avis rental. It was a '58 Ford Custom 300, in the exact two-tone red-and-black that was the most popular color combo for that model. Exactly what Mr. Avis would rent you--Avis was with Ford at the time, Hertz with GM.

The car Johnny Ola's driving is a '58 Chrysler New Yorker. I bet it was Roth's car because that model was exactly what a wealthy Jew of that era would drive. Both are typical examples of FFC's obsession with authentic touches.

This commercial is silly to begin with (and seems like a scam?) but the really funny part is the old lady standing in front of the lake saying "I had no idea my gold jewelry was worth so much money". The way she says it cracks me up every time.

BL, that gold one is a good one. I always laugh about the lady who "sent in [her] diamond wedding band from her first marriage" because I figure maybe she's getting married just to send in her jewelry later on.

There's this great commercial on now about the govt. bailout, and it has the American flag waving in the background, with this really patriotic and powerful music playing, which my friend and I love to imitate. We laugh at how you always know it's on, because it's twice as loud as anything else that comes on the station.
