I'm pretty sure the interiors of the Woltz mansion, and very possibly the shots in the stable, were filmed at the Guggenheim estate on Long Island. My uncle was Harry Guggenheim's executive assistant, George Fountaine, and he often told me of arranging for permission to film there.

Also, I believe that Best & Co., the building used in the movie that's been closed, was located on Fifth Ave. but in the 30's (my wife used to work there). There is currently a Best & Co. located on Fifth uptown from St. Patrick's located in the Bergdorf Goodman bldg, but that is a new location.

Correct on both, Movie Expert. Best and Co.'s original location was closed at the time of the shooting, but they used the exterior. Those details are found in Harlan Lebo's "The Godfather Legacy," which is the bible on stuff like that and much else.

I don't know 100% on Guggenheim, though... it's been challenged a few times, and recently I got yet another challenge which also seemed convincing -- I'd have to dig it out of my email. Will try to do that soon...

I thought I remember hearing that the Woltz mansion scene was somewhere out west - that's why the scene with Woltz and Hagen walking by the pool features body doubles - there was not enough money in budget to fly them out for one scene.

I don't have Lebo handy, but if memory serves the interiors and exteriors were different places. The exteriors were shot out west and the interiors supposedly at the Guggenheim on L.I.

Here's the email I got corroborating the exteriors of Woltz' mansion being the Hearst/Davies estate:
Quote:
Just a quick note that as I have read your list of filming locations, and one of the most famous scene locations in the movie is incorrectly identified for quite some time now. I can assure you that the estate that is the location for the exterior shots of the Woltz Estate is NOT Harold Lloyd's Green Acres OR the Guggenhiem Estate in the East. It is the Marion Davies Estate on Coldwater Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills. I walked by it every other day with my dog for 10 years! Anyone who has lived in that area, as I have, knows that property. (And also Harold Lloyd's which was just down the street from me). And for further verification it is featured, in full color, in the coffee table book "Estates of Beverly Hills" for anyone to see. It was recently put up for sale for $165 Million Dollars and was featured in quite a few magazines.

I hope this puts to bed the exterior Woltz location issue.

Here are some photos. This is the same estate seen in this thread, so that can be put to bed (tho it already was, without the horse's head), ...though I need to fix it on the GF Site. wink

I assume the interiors were indeed shot at the Guggenheim estate.

Here's what Lebo wrote in "The Godfather Legacy" (second edition, p. 137):
"The Godfather relocation scouts had obtained use of one of the most glamorous residences in teh country, the Guggenheim family estate on Long Island Sound, which had been donated to the state of New York.

"Scenes filmed at the Guggenheim estate included a walking tour of the grounds with Hagen and Woltz[emphasis added], a visit to the stable to meet the still living horse Khartoum, conbersations over dinner, and the discovery of the head." He makes no mention of the Davies estate.

A comparison of the landscaping/building is in order... I don't have time right now, though.

Maybe Harlan is correct. The Davies Estate looks much different to me.

Wait. I stand corrected. It is the William Randolph Hearst Estate. My last comparison must be different locations on the estate.

I just surfed the web trying to find pics of the estates mentioned above for comparison with what's in the film. It's a challenge. Plus, what different people write about the locations is in conflict. I give up.

Although the estate has definitely been renovated since the movie, I think the 2 comparisons above clearly show it is the same estate.

Hmmm, they mush have renovated it, the pool looks a lot wider in the first picture, also, Watching GF on Bravo has to be an Infamnia

He - (Simón Bolívar) - was shaken by the overwhelming revelation that the headlong race between his misfortunes and his dreams was at that moment reaching the finishing line. The rest was darkness. "Damn it," He sighed. "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!"

So what’s the labyrinth?

That’s the mystery isn’t it? Is the labyrinth living or dying? Which is he trying to escape - the world, or, the end of it?

The pool is definitely wider, and the buildings on the sides have been expanded too. But, if you look at the fine details such as window and door locations, and even the 2 palm trees located behind the main building in the exact location in both photos, IMO it is clearly the same estate.

There are two pluses to Bravo. #1, It's the "Saga" version. And #2, the TV edit for language is hilarious.

Here's another email I just got, in reference to where Sonny was shot...
Quote:
As far as the exact location of he scene in which Sonny is gunned down at the tool booths, I have it for you. My friend and I carefully studied the scene after hearing a rumor that it was filmed in proximity to Nassau Community College on Long Island. I found the EXACT location yesterday on my bicycle. I will supply you with some photos in the future. The scene was shot on an abandoned runway used at Mitchel Field Air Corps base from WWII. It is still there to this day, but presently used as the Nassau County Police's vehicle training course. The radio tower is in the rear of the shot, as well as the water tower in the front of the shot. It also appears as if there are remains of some metal anchors used from the tool booths (unknown). here is the link to the Google aerial map

Garrett M., Long Island, NY

TB, I can't quite make out what Frankie is saying which you are phonetically spelling as oosh. I think he may be mispronouncing a word because he's basically saying he promised them D*ck or s**t (cazzo). Can you make out that oosh any better or anyone else on the Board have better ears than me?
