How sad. I liked many of his movies, and always admired how he managed to keep his personal life pretty much personal, and the fact that he and Joanne Woodward have been married so long, which is rare for average people, let alone a celebrity couple. What a loss!! TIS

What a loss!! TIS Nevermind those charities he's helped over the years with his brand-name salad dressings and other products that he's used his fame and name-recognition to sell. I must admit, if in an alternate reality where I was talented and had good looks, err I mean BETTER looks, and tried to be an actor, Paul Newman would be my role-model. "One of my greatest accomplishments!" - Newman on finding out that he was named on President Richard M. Nixon's famed "Enemies" List.

RRA, TIS and other fans... What do you rate as his top movies? I haven't seen many of his films. Well, there are many you could pick. From THE HUSTLER to HUD to THE STING to COOL HAND LUKE to BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID to the greatest hockey movie ever made in SLAP SHOT to ABSENCE OF MALICE to THE VERDICT to the alright Scorsese-helmed HUSTLER sequel in THE COLOR OF MONEY to Newman's own-directed THE GLASS MENAGERIE with John Malkovich to ROAD TO PERDITION to the Coens' HUDSUCKER PROXY to so forth. You know what's weird though? His TORN CURTAIN he did with Julie Andrews under director Alfred Hitchcock, was on TCM last night.

This is very sad news for me. Paul Newman was my favorite actor, but beyond that, he was a true gentleman and an upstanding guy.
One of my first memories of remembering an actor was that of Newman in "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (the story of boxer, Rocky Graziano). I saw it when I was about 8 or 9 years old and I was hooked on Newman. As I got a little older and was exposed to more of his movies, I got to appreciate how truly great he was. His role of Brick in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" is one of my favorites, and his portrayal always moves me.
He had so many great roles in great movies - "The Hustler", "Hud", "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Verdict" come immediately to mind, but one of his last movies - "Nobody's Fool" has taken a special place in my heart.
I've shared this story on the boards before, but I'll repeat it now. Newman and wife, Joanne Woodward, were regular diners at my old bar hangout, Molyvos (a Greek restaurant in midtown Manhattan). They'd come in once a month on Thursday nights. On one of their visits, I had the "opportunity" to meet him - I was walking towards the men's room, as was he, and we literally bumped into each other. I said, "Excuse me, I'm sorry". He replied, "Oh no, it was my fault". I then said to him, "OK, in that case, don't do it again", to which he laughed and said "OK". Real down-to-earth and unpretentious!
He was a superstar in every sense of the word.
A very sad day, indeed.
R.I.P., Paul and thanks for the memories and hours of enjoyment on the screen.

A very sad day.
There's not much that I can add to what everyone is saying. He was maybe my favorite actor ever; definitely in the top 3 or 4, that's for sure.
Acting aside, his generosity was unparalleled. What impressed me the most about Newman was that he never fell into that Hollywood political trap. I mean, he was generous, liberal minded and clearly looked out for the "little guy," but he did it without any fanfare or hoopla like so many other Hollywood stars (George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, Barbara Streisand, et al.)
A truly anonoymous benefactor in so many cases. Class personified. Just knowing that he's actually gone has me missing him already.
In a small coincidence, I just saw CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at a special library screening up in Westchester. It was an early, brooding and very underrated performance on Paul's part. He and Burl Ives complemented each other beautifully as father and son. And Liz Taylor, well, just gorgeous, but that's for another thread, and another day.
R.I.P. Paul.

RRA, TIS and other fans... What do you rate as his top movies? I haven't seen many of his films. That's hard to answer. I like many of his films, although I admit I havent' seen much of his more recent work. I really liked Butch Cassidy & I liked The Sting; I remember seeing Torn Curtain when it came out, and although I don't think it was one of his more popular movies, I liked it. Gosh, some of these movies I have seen only once (The Sting for instance). One that really sticks out for me is "Cool Hand Luke." I still remember working at my dad's dry cleaners on Saturdays, and the radio would be going all day. I'd hear the commercial for that film would come on with the phrase "What we have here is a failure to communicate." I have the actor's face in my head, but don't know his name. I am sure SC does though. I also remember the ads for Hombre, which wa a good movie too. All that being said, I must admit I really like the more "soapy" ones. You know Tennesee Williams, "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and "The Long Hot Summer.". In the end, I don't know if I can pick a favorite AND I am sure I am forgetting so many more that are worth mentioning. What talented and gifted actor Paul Newman was. TIS

I am sure SC does though. Strother Martin. If I rated some of his movies as MUST SEES, I'd include "Cool Hand Luke" with "The Hustler" (possibly one of the greatest dramatic characerizations ever), "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with Elizabeth Taylor as his unloved wife - a truly WONDERFUL movie about a dysfunctional family and of redemption, "Hud" (Newman played a fairly despicable charatcer but you felt for him) and "The Verdict" (a lawyer past his prime gets a case that could restore his life).

wow, this is hated news, I mean, I only saw a couple of his movies, but still, all the work he did with the charities, just, wow
He - (Simón Bolívar) - was shaken by the overwhelming revelation that the headlong race between his misfortunes and his dreams was at that moment reaching the finishing line. The rest was darkness. "Damn it," He sighed. "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!" So what’s the labyrinth? That’s the mystery isn’t it? Is the labyrinth living or dying? Which is he trying to escape - the world, or, the end of it?

Cool Hand Luke is definitely my favorite. Fifty eggs in "a hour" as Luke put it. It's finally time to see if I can find it on dvd.
Also, I'll remember him every time I walk down the salad dressing aisle.

COOL HAND LUKE is my dad's favorite film of all time, and a personal favorite of mine, as well. THE STING is great too, along with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. The last of his films I saw was ROAD TO PERDITION, which is a highly underrated film, in my book. Very sad news. RIP
