I personally think Clinton was a good president. He was a southern Democrat who governed from the center, unlike Obama who governs from the left. I wouldn't say it's small or insignificant. That minority is also quite vocal. I've spoken to enough people who actually believe some of the lies that I can't consider it "small".

As for what he's done besides get Bin Laden? How about when he took office, the Dow was scraping 7,000 and it's double that now. That means that everyone's retirement account has followed suit. Housing is in recovery. His auto industry bailout worked, and Cash for Clunkers succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. Unemployment is down as well.

I would like to point out the auto bailout was mostly ACORN funds, which Bush pre-approved before he left office.

But of all the things you mentioned how many of those can be directly attributed to Obama? Those industries and the DOW (with the exception of the auto) recovered on its own. It's like the saying with mother nature: you leave it alone, sooner or later it comes back. Unemployment is not as bad, but it needs to be down a lot further. I think it's still around 7. I'm not just discrediting Obama, I'm discrediting our government as a whole, that refuses to compromise, refuses to pass a budget, and has become more useless than the dirt on my shoes. It's outrageous.

As for the Affordable Care Act, we will see how successful it's going to be when costs rise, companies start cutting hours and hire only part time.

are you so sure that it will work? answer me this, how on earth does having employers cutting hours or getting rid of or stalling on hiring new employees to stay within certain criteria help us in the big picture? if this act is so great, than why has there been so many pushes from so many different groups to be exempt? so congress will be required to go through the exchanges. its a damn good thing that they won't continue to recieve any sort of a federal contribution to the plans that they purchase, which if it was the case would basically amount to these trusted representatives being exempt from the same financial concerns that many share with regards to this legislation.

my advice to you would be to start brainstorming, come up with the excuses now as to why it was a trainwreck. my advice, i would claim that it was the fault of the racist rightwing nutjobs. oh, and maybe work bush in there somehow!

the government fucks up every single big project that they get into, i can't think of really anything worthwhile that they've accomplished on a large scale, other than maybe the creation of the national parks. as far as agencies, the only one that does a decent job imo is the department of fish, game and wildlife.

There is also this little nettlesome issue of economics and finance that liberals don't seem to understand. 43% of this country already doesn't pay income tax, and this act is meant only to serve them. The problem is, there are certain small to mid sized business' that are going to cut back or avoid hiring or put people at part time status to avoid this disaster.

Your an attorney right? My cousin is an attorney whose firm cut him and 3 others just so they could get under the 50 person criteria to avoid the affordable care act. But who cares about that.

As for Affordable Care and the cutting of hours, do you really think employers haven't been doing this for years already? I know plenty that will keep employees at 30 hours rather than pay for medical benefits because they are so unaffordable. And remember the days when your employer paid for them? And when your doctor could decide whether you needed a test or not? Not the insurance company? Or what medicine you should take?

Medical care has gotten out of control in this country and we have to do something. I don't know enough about the Affordable Care Act to decide if it will do it, but it's better than nothing, which is what too many people have now.

As for unemployment, Joe, yes, I agree, it needs to be lower. But at least it's headed in the right direction. As for your cousin, Vinnie, if he was an attorney working at an office that didn't already offer medical benefits, he needed a new job anyway. The Affordable Care Act will only impact those that don't already have insurance.

Of course people have been cutting hours for years. But its when companies that typically paid for benefits (such as law firms) start cutting to avoid getting hit with the taxes and issues of the Healthcare act it is quite problematic. So just saying "theyve always done this" doesn't really address the issues that this act brings.
We all know who this act is meant to placate; lets not sugar coat it. What people don't realize is that this act is going to put more people at the welfare and food stamp lines.

Honestly, I have no idea what you're implying. I know that my company doesn't offer any benefits. At my last job, as an outside contractor I had to get my own insurance. Luckily, my husband has benefits and we get them through his company.

However, did it occur to anyone that this is just another excuse for corporations to cut hours, and once again ask workers to do more for less?? It's been the trend for years now. People are so terrified of losing their jobs that they're swallowing whatever their companies hand out.

This is just another way that corporations have put the screws to the middle and working class and lined their own pockets with greater profits. And I don't mean to sound idealist or socialist at all. However, the days when companies were loyal to their employees is, by and large, over.

My husband's boss's boss was just laid off after 25 years with the company. Why? Did she have bad reviews? Nope, glowing reviews, good employee, always worked very hard, worked her way up the ladder from Admin to VP. So, why was she laid off? They got a new CIO who wanted his own people in place, not people from the old regime. And they could probably bring in somebody new at less money, too, or maybe not replace her at all.

When you are referring to corporations, I believe you are referring to big corporations. I am talking bout small to mid sized companies with close to 50 or just over 50 employees. What we would term small business'. These smallish companies are cutting manpower, cutting hours and hiring less to get under the 50 person criteria. These are not "big corporations". I agree about big corporations, I have disdain for many of them. I believe they are all about fucking the customer base and their employees so they can make a little extra money.
I am pro small business, and I do not believe that this act is in any way helpful to small business.

Vinnie, I agree about small business. The county where I live has mostly small business, and very few major corporations. That's honestly why we've done better in a bad economy. The businesses have ties to the community and some loyalty to the area and their employees, so they're not so willing to shut down, pick up stakes and move, as a big corporation might. However, I've found that most of them cut benefits to their employees a long time ago. When the economy gets tough, that's the first thing to go.

The modern Republican party won't/can't distance itself from such people which is why it is in danger of becoming an explicitly white nationalist party. In a country that is changing rapidly demographically this could become an increasing problem over the next 3-4 presidential elections.

As long as the reasonable ones do not stand up to the crazies, they will be where the Dems were from Nixon through Bush I. they only had one president during that era, Jimmy Carter, who was an anamoly.
