I realize Yogi started a thread for U.K. Rememberance Day, but here in the USA we honor the military veteran and the lives lost in war. Five years ago I visited Italy. We were early for our first tour stop, so we side-tracked to the American Cemetary in Nettuno, Italy. Nettuno is next to Anzio which was the site of an Allied landing and battle. The cemetery holds the bodies of American soldiers who lost their lives in battles in Italy and Sicily. Worldwide there are 24 American owned and maintained cemeteries for soldiers. They contain almost 125,000 bodies. They are administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Below is a picture I took of the Sicily-Rome Cemetery in Nettuno. It was a very sobering visit.

Doesn't it summarize the pointlessness of war? All those lives lost, just so we can do it again and again. How very sad for these young lives cut short, and the loved ones they left behind. My uncle served in WWII in the Navy. He was involved in many battles in the Pacific. He's 85 and every year he attends his ship's reunion. A close friend of mine lost his son in Iraq. He died on his birthday, 30 days before his scheduled discharge on his second tour of Iraq. He had been discharged from the Marines prior to 9/11/2001. After the attack on WTC, he re-enlisted. He left behind a wife and two children. Like so many, he gave his life honorably and unselfishly for his country......as you said above SB.

It's a shame that this holiday, and the observance of the thousands and thousands who have given themselves to war, that the reality of it's ugliness and heartbreak, doesn't make all wars end. It's just not the way it works sadly. FWIW, I rememember my dad and mom saying many times where they were when Pearl Harbor was attacked......They had just come out of a movie theater and the newspaper boy on the street was selling the newspapers, giving the newsflash. How shocking that must have been. My dad went into the army shortly after. TIS

You know what I don't support?
The troops.
"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

The troops. This is why so many of the better posters are leaving these boards. "The troops" have spilled their blood in the service of their country. I do not agree with every war this country has fought, but this view does not diminish the sacrifices they made for the rest of us. Without "the troops" in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI and WWII we would have lost our democracy. For the most part "the troops" have trditionally come from the lower income people of this country so the rest of us can watch our flat screen televisions, and do things like, I dunno, worship freely, speak freely, vote, and watch George Bush and Barrack Obama who agree on little, transfer power without violence, but with dignity and grace.

Then you should kept your thoughts to yourself, that statement is no use in this thread... Show some respect.. Fuck you. You know what I don't support?

I'm not even going to read your post; chill out. It was a joke.

The troops. That's okay. They have done a lot without your support. You wouldn't be able to do a thing without theirs. Couldn't have said it any better. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. Thank you to all who gave their life to preserve it.

Then you should kept your thoughts to yourself, that statement is no use in this thread... Show some respect.. Fuck you. And fuck you, too, for a couple more weeks. See how this works?
I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations
