I've seen quite a few posters enhance their points by citing deleted scenes. My question is should they be given the same significance as actual movie scenes? I typically consider only what is in the movies canon, with deleted scenes (and the book for that matter) evidence of what Coppola/Puzo's mindset may have been regarding certain things but not canon. I figure if it wasn't part of the final cut, it isn't canon, pure and simple. It isn't up to me to speculate why those scenes were omitted; time constraints, artistic vision, etc. Ultimately, it does come down to the individual's opinion. For those who disagree with me, I would like to see the logic behind your perspective. (I also frequently try to pretend GFIII did not occur but begrudgingly will acknowledge it is canon )

IMHO some of the deleted scenes could have stayed deleted, however one that should have been left in was the scene in GFII when Michael finally takes his revenge on Fabrizzio.
As you know, there's yet another version of the Fab revenge scene in which Michael personally dispatches Fab with a lupara. That one was filmed (Lebo's book has stills) but was never released in any form. I'd give my left coglione to see that one.

... It showed a human side of Michael. There were plenty of scenes showing 'a human side of Michael' that remained in the film(s). People seem to focus more on other things, though. Anyway, there was once a thread where people were asked to name some of their 'favorite' deleted scenes, and/or those they wished had not ended up deleted. Mine was that of Bonasera preparing to meet with Vito at his request following Sonny's death. Absolutely dreading what Don Corleone is about to request of him and cursing the day his wife and Mrs. Corleone became friends...

Deleted scenes in the FFC canon are very critical, and IMHO a lot of things that were cut out of the Godfather movies should have stayed in, and my guess is the studio made him cut scenes for the sake of shortening these relatively long movies.
How important? See Apocalype Now Redux which includes several deleted scenes, including an entire section devoted to a post colonial French family living in the jungle and refusing to leave. There is no question that this version, released by FFC a few years ago is far superior to the original.
BTW note that in Apocalypse Now FFC used some of the same actors he used in the GF films including Brando, Duvall and the guy who played Sen. Geary (he was a General).
"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"
"I stood in the courtroom like a fool."
"I am Constanza: Lord of the idiots."
