Ive read a few accounts of the crimes in True-Cime files & books over the years. Some authors write of "rumours" that the family was connected, but that these were just that, only rumours and not true. In fact, some went to some pains to get their point across, that the links to mobsters were tenuous and and the mob-hit theory entirely untrue.
I was fascinated, then to learn about Pete DeFeo and his connection's to the murdered family. Really, with this information, one could understand why police would have had to consider him a suspect very early on. I also found these connections not so tenuous after all, & wondered why so many strove to discount them.
However, i have to admit that despite this intriguing mob aspect to the infamous slayings (i watched the first "Amityville Horror" movie as a kid, it scared the piss out of me), i could never bring myself to believe that the Amityville murders were mob-hits; it just seems like such total unnessacary overkill. Even if Pete did think that his brothers son & wife were going to rat him out, would they really go so far as to kill the four kids, aged 9, 12, 14, 18? Even in Sicily, where they've been known to kill children, this would be a bit much, no?
And Butch DeFeo just fits the type doesn't he? Emotionally retarded, socially inept, drug abuse...holy shit, throw in computer illiterate and you got me! Hm wait a minute...
(cough.)

No-one seriously claimed it was a mob-hit, but a new documentary due in 2012 explores the mafia angle, with a view to legitimizing Ronnie's alleged "secret" wife - Geraldine DeFeo http://www.amityvillefilm.com/FamilyTies.htmlThere's already been a book about this woman - The Night The DeFeo's Died - and how she claims Ronnie had help in the murders (including his sister) but a look online shows many people view her as a fraud, while denouncing her claims and the books author. Now, this documentary is based on the book, but has further information to show Gerladine DeFeo was really his wife. The above link explores the mafia angle. I'm wondering how true people find that page, and is it worth shelling out when their DVD boxset arrives? So -- apparently this woman was "secret" because the mob erased her records... Accordingly, Brigante was told by certain informants that, as the trial of Butch DeFeo approached, the Suffolk DA's office was looking at the possibility that there was a female accomplice involved in the killings with Butch. Brigante believed that Geraldine was the "female" that they were going to wrongly focus on. Therefore, the mob families erased Geraldine's marriage records and any indication that she and Butch had been legally connected in an effort to protect her from wrongful prosecution. Now is something which was commonly done? Erasing someone's entire records like that, just before a trial? Is it even possible? Her cousin, Joe Lombardi, does a lot of talking in the article - any word on him?

Going through this again--- Geraldine DeFeo-Gates' cousin, a New Jersey Lombardi, who goes by "Joe" agrees with the conclusions reached by Shattered producers, and has, over the past year, explained a great deal of the connections that even Geraldine herself was apparently unaware of. Even today, 42 years after Philip Lombardi tooks the reigns of the Genovese family from Vito Genovese, the Lombardi name is still prominent. Interesting, because according to this very forum - http://www.gangsterbb.net/threads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=598496- Philip "Benny Squint" Lombardo took over Genovese. Seems such a basic error to make. Maybe the guy was trying to throw people off the scent because if you research his claims, it's all bunk? Still, if anyone has any, I'd like to hear more stories like the mob families erased Geraldine's marriage records and any indication that she and Butch had been legally connected in an effort to protect her from wrongful prosecution. as I aint buying it.
