So I came upon this pod show accidentally, and they had this great fun topic that is worth debating: What if the Beatles' two LP classic album THE BEATLES (aka The White Album) had been released as only one LP? Which tracks would have survived the cut, and which the rest that gets locked in a drawer? The ground rules as per the pod show: (1) No more than 14 tracks, the LP average setlist # of songs. (2) Can only use the tracks released on the White Album. (3) You can put tracks into any order that fancies you. (4) Don't forget the flip side nature of the LP. Not essential, just a thought worth remembering. (5) Remember that group's massively sensitive egos, so if possible try to humor McCartney/Harrison/Lennon/Ringo with a song each they sang. Not essential, but just a note. For reference, the album plus lead vocalist. Disc #1 1. "Back in the U.S.S.R." McCartney 2. "Dear Prudence" Lennon 3. "Glass Onion" Lennon 4. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" McCartney 5. "Wild Honey Pie" McCartney 6. "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" Lennon 7. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" Harrison 8. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" Lennon 9. "Martha My Dear" McCartney 10. "I'm So Tired" Lennon 11. "Blackbird" McCartney 12. "Piggies" Harrison 13. "Rocky Raccoon" McCartney 14. "Don't Pass Me By" Starr 15. "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" McCartney 16. "I Will" McCartney 17. "Julia" Lennon Disc #2 1. "Birthday" McCartney/Lennon 2. "Yer Blues" Lennon 3. "Mother Nature's Son" McCartney 4. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" Lennon 5. "Sexy Sadie" Lennon 6. "Helter Skelter" McCartney 7. "Long, Long, Long" Harrison 8. "Revolution 1" Lennon 9. "Honey Pie" McCartney 10. "Savoy Truffle" (Harrison) Harrison 11. "Cry Baby Cry" Lennon, with McCartney 12. "Revolution 9" Lennon/Harrison/Ono 13. "Good Night" Starr This should be a fun game. My list will come up later. http://www.podarama.com/fab_fourum/blog.php

Well, interesting game RR. This is my favorite Beatle album so choosing songs that I like along with your suggestions of considering egos, and considering what I know now to be the popular cuts from the LP, here are my choice songs for the "condensed" White Album:
1."Glass Onion" Lennon 2.Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" McCartney 3.Wild Honey Pie" McCartney 4.The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" Lennon 5.While My Guitar Gently Weeps" Harrison 6.Happiness Is a Warm Gun" Lennon[/b] 7.Little Piggies" Harrison 8.Rocky Raccoon" McCartney 9.Don't Pass Me By" Starr 10.Birthday" McCartney/Lennon 11.Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" Lennon 12.Helter Skelter" McCartney 13.Savoy Truffle" (Harrison) 14.Cry Baby Cry
There were many that I knew immediately simply HAD to be on the album like Rocky Racoon, Little Piggies, Bungalow Bill, and Ob Li Di, Ob La Da, simply because they are not only different but good songs.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps has such a nice tone to it and is one of Harrison's best, while McCartney's Helter Skelter is so opposite with it's rough edge. Oh, and Lennons' Happiness is a Warm Gun another one of a kind.
I suppose I felt obliged to give poor Ringo his due, even though I am not crazy about either of the tunes. Not that he does them badly. They are not on my list as favorites. But, I went with "Don't Pass Me By."
And I'm leaving off others I like simply because there is no room: I'm So Tired, and Martha My Dear.
I only left off Revolution 1 because it was released on a single (the best version IMHO). Revolution 9, I guess I never really liked or just didn't get it. The only song I'll skip if I play the album.

My White Album
I haaaaaate Rocky Raccoon and Bungalow Bill Really? Ha ha ha. I think they are both fun songs. You can't help but sing along. I don't really hate or even "dislike" any song on that album, some are ok, like Julia and Blackbird and I'm So Tired is pretty good, specifically, " I curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid get." Don't know why that amuses me (whatever a "get" is) However, like I mentioned above, IF I had to pick one song I didn't like, it'd be Revolution 9. TIS

I think when he's saying "get" he's meaning "git" which is meaning a"fool" etc.. Hey DeNiro. You're right. It is "git"! I looked up the definition: British for a foolish or worthless person. I assumed it was something like that. It's just not a word I am use to hearing. Btw, I don't see your list of songs for RR's condensed White Album. TIS

Not on my list, but I do Like "Martha My Dear". It has an real old-fashion 1920ish or so type sound. I read only recently that George wrote Savoy Truffle after a box of chocolates (i.e. cream tangerine). Only the Beatles could pull something like that off. I also read and recently posted here somewhere, that while singing Ob Li Di, at the very end, when Paul says, "Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face", that it was an error on Paul's part, that they just left in the song. As far as Yoko goes, I really don't remember anyone I knew, at the time, that liked her. We all wondered what John saw in her. I think his fans, (as though they have a say) wanted him to stay with Cynthia. TIS

For the few who may be interested, here's the link from the Beatle Brunch show (which I just listened to) that's on every Sunday from 9:00 - 10:00 (in California). I see it originates in NYC, so some in the are may know of it. I haven't browsed the site but plan to. Anyway, if you're interested. I've looked forward to hearing it every week since I discovered it. It has many original interview clips with the Beatles (and others) and every week discusses a different topic of their lives, music and careers. TIS Btw, speaking of Beatle songs, today's show ended with one of my all time favorite Beatle song NOT on the White Album...."A Day In The Life". Love it!!!! http://www.brunchradio.com/Sounds/clips.html

I read only recently that George wrote Savoy Truffle after a box of chocolates (i.e. cream tangerine). Only the Beatles could pull something like that off. Martha was Paul's dog, and supposedly the part about "hold your head up you silly girl look what you've done...when you find yourself in the thick of it....is a veiled reference to Martha having "an accident" inside the house.
