Is the detroit family still alive. I know on this site past reports have said they are no longer a active family but a lot of other sites contradict that. I have seen reports saying they still have a heirarchy and as many as 40 soldiers which would make them as big as philly and NJ. Was hoping someone could clear this up for me

They seem to be around, but whether they're still involved in any serious criminal activity is probably up for debate. Their boss is worth at least $50 million. Money he can show by the way.

I don't think there are 40 Italians left in Detroit, let alone LCN soldiers .

We also have to keep in mind most of these guys are high up in age. Jack Tocco was born in 1927. Chances are he's retired and playing golf with all the judges and lawyers he knows.

If he's that age I wonder if he would still be able to play golf.

Well, my father was born in 1929, and he still walks the course. I was born in '59, and I have to take a cart!

I don't know how active the Detroit Family still is or even if it still exists as such. From time to time there are a few mentions of bookmaking shakedowns or allegations of extortion of waste management companies and a few other crimes/businesses , including towing or real estate.

I don't think any of them would live in Detroit. From what I've read they long ago decamped to the Grosse Pointes or a few of the more working class suburbs like Warren, EastPointe, Sterling Heights, etc.

Detroit is one of those families that is argued about often because it's in a gray area, so to speak. By that I mean, some law enforcement reports cite it as still having a viable family, while others do not. If that's all we had to go by, I suppose one could be justified in going one way or the other. But for me at least, the lack of indictments involving the Detroit family over the past several years tells us more. Over the past decade, there has really only been one significant case involving the Detroit mob and that was a gambling and loansharking bust that involved about 15 people back in 2006. Before that, you have to go back to the mid-1990's when Jack Tocco and a number of other top guys in the family were indicted.

Furthermore, I don't put a whole lot of stock in those charts listing 40+ members for Detroit. Back in the mid-1990's, the family was said to have about 30 members at most. And that was a decade and a half ago. It's unlikely that what's left of the mob in a place like Detroit has defied the general trend and actually grown in size. I'm willing to bet that, while some of those names listed are indeed members, others are associates or others who have been misidentified as made guys. If I had to guess, the total membership for the family is probably under 25 now.

Detroit doesn't have the membership or amount of activity that families in New England, New Jersey, or Philadelphia do. I'd put it closer to what's left of the mob in Buffalo.

I've grown up and still live in the metro Detroit area. I would say they are still very active, I've heard they have a stake in Tringale sanitation and usually hang around a privately owned clubhouse on Gratiot called Danny Boys Social club. Or if you just want to see some of them hanging around and are in the area you can try Bacco's Restaurant on northwestern or Luciano's on 17 and Garfield in Clinton Township, if you really want to learn more about them you can pick up a book by the name of Motor City Mafia , very informative book written by Scott Burnstein who as far as I can tell can answer any questions you have about them.

Scott posts often over on the Real Deal forum. He's given a lot of great info on the Detroit mob, both past and present, but I personally think he tends to overstate the size and scope of the Detroit family at present. Just my opinion.
