Well, that's the great thing about the Trilogy: the films are so rich in detail that you can always spot a new and interesting nuance no matter how many times you've seen them. I'd guess that FFC put Neri behind Michael in that scene to emphasize that he's the new Don (and thus merits bodyguard protection)--just as he emphasized Vito's retirement by having him dressed like an old Sicilian peasant and peering into his fishtank all the time. In the novel, Neri doesn't become glued to Michael until the period of time between Tessio's proposal to meet with Barzini "on my territory--where you'll be safe" and the Great Massacre of 1955.

In the scene where Clemenza & Tessio are questioning Michael's tactics in Vito's old office, Neri is standing directly behind Michael's chair. When Michael is telling Carlo to be "the right hand man" and when Michael explains that Hagen is out, Neri is behind Michael.
I find it odd that Neri is standing there in what appears to be a protective mode. I could understand if Michael was meeting with outsiders such as the scenes with Moe Green or Sen. Geary. But it just seems unnecessary to me that Neri is so close to Michael in what I would deem a "safe" ennvironment. Then again, Tessio later became a traitor...
Anyway, I guess I'm posting only because it was something "new" I discovered after multiple viewings. Wow... I also (for the first time) noticed the same thing while I was watching it last night! I've seen the movie about 50 times. Weird!

I think if you would go back and read the book again, you'd read the real story behind that. No you've misunderstood. Of course I knew about Neri. And I've read the book more than once. What I said was that I never actually saw Neri standing right behind Michael in that particular scene before.
