Joey Sodano, like Junior, feels that he doesn't get the respect he deserves for all his years in the Mafia, and he resents the young up-and-comers, like Christopher Moltisanti, who think of respect as an Aretha Franklin song.

Joey Sodano was killed supposedly by Merlino supporters in the Stanfa-Merlino war.

When he was starting to get demented there was a serious risk he was going to be a liability.

The same thing happened with Willie Moretti and he got whacked for it.

I'm no expert but I would think if this was a real situation, once he gave an order to kill Tony, he would have been terminated. But then again, when you look at other situations (e.g., Casso who killed his attempted executioner, but not the guy behind the hit), it's not that far fetched he wasn't after his power was taken out from under him.
