Instead of trying to rewrite/update/improve upon/embellish already well-established characters, why not a series of novels chronicling the rise of each of the other Dons?
It might be interesting to read about what Phillip Tattaglia, Carmine Cuneo or Emilio Barzini were up to when Vito was making grocery deliveries. At least, it would be a potentially fresh approach to a story that's pretty much run its course.
Don't get me wrong, I'll probably watch the GF saga thousands more times before my life's end. But, with grosso respeto, the Corleone tale has been told.
