I think there will always be criminal of every race who are willing to kill. The thing is with how advanced forensics are these days it is so easy to get caught so killing really is used only as an absolute last resort by the mafia. i agree with this

I know there are still some but it must be hard to find guys who are really ruthless now. Joey Testa and Anthony Senter are these kind of guys gone for good now?

As George Freselone said, the mob today values earners more than killers. They don't care if you've never even seen a gun. There isn't that many murders they have to do anyway so there will always be somebody available. Sammy "Meatballs" Aparo was taped talking about how he thought, out of the 200 member Genovese family, they had about 40 guys who could do hits. Even half of that would be more than enough. This is interesting. Even tho I've heard that in some family they've brought that thing back...especially after all the rats. It's also true that, today, it takes a big while before whacking someone...I mean they have to be 100% sure because they know what that leads to > FBI. AND There are way less murders compared to the 70s. So less murders, less opportunities to be made...so they had to do something about it before people would not get promoted for years. Oh...it's like this in Sicily. A newly flipped "made guy" confirmed that he got promoted without having killed anyone. He was a good earner and was part of it since he was a teen.

In Philly only: Casasanto - Turchi - Martorano - Maniscalco all in the past 7 years.
Plus there was the Bruno hit in Springfield, MA.
The only mob hit in philly in the last 7 years is maybe Maniscalco. But its been said that it may not have been a mob related hit. The other 3 occurred in 99, 02 and 03 I believe. I kind of agree with the posters point. I just think there are more guys playing on the fact that they could hurt/murder you or use to hurt people and use that to try to scare guys now. That's why I think you see a lot more independents and even rats these days just living out in the open almost. Ive been saying how people just aren't scared of the mob like they use to... in philly at least.

Ivy don't you think though the Genovese' really messed up the Bruno hit? Why use young guys who aren't made to do it? The result was the Feds got a snitch and found out everything. yeah i thought that as well, prob the fam didnt care at all for arrilotta or springfield idk They messed up in a number of ways. First, I'm surprised a guy like Arilotta ever got made to begin with. Probably a result of attrition in that crew. And him promising to send more money down to NY, and the evidence about Bruno possibly being an informant, encouraged Nigro to back him and the Geas brothers. These young punks started pushing around the old timers, including Tranghese, and hired a druggie to do the hit on Bruno. I think it's really Nigro that messed up. And if he already wasn't in prison for life, I wouldn't have been surprised if the family had him killed.
