I think DeMeo, psychopath that he was, cared for his son very much. This may have helped the Feds leverage him. Plus, crazy people are just plain unpredictable. And the guy was fucking pazzo . So maybe?

And the Feds haven't given the death penalty to a gangster since Lepke Buchalter, almost seventy years ago.

I think he would have gone to very far lengths to avoid imprisonment; the fake death involving the son and in particular, the fleeing to a foreign county shows this.
I think the Feds could have flipped him, not in the beginning, maybe during or after trial (in which his testimony would have meant less and less to his case as the trials went on) but definitely when they convinced him of the life his children and family would live once Roy's imprisonment. He wouldn't have flipped like Gravano or MIkey Scars but he would have flipped like Massino.
Shit, even if the guy had no children or wife, it'd be hell being one of his co-defendents. Hell, if I had 26 murders I was lookin' at in court, I wouldn't want DeMeo as one of my co-defendents.

They'll give deals to anyone to get a boss or top capo, they'll argue the ends justify the means but really it's just a scummy and dirty way to puff their chests out and pat themselves on the back. we often forget demeo was not a boss or a top capo. he wasn't even made all that long. Summer of 1977 he got made I think
