What ever happen to the Codefendents from the 1980's pizza connection case in NJ ? I know most where from south NJ and PA . Unless I have missunderstood you, five of the defendents in the Pizza Connection Trials in New York had residences in NJ. They are/were Francesco Castronovo, Gaetano Mazzara, Giovanni Ligamari, Filippo Salamone and Salvatore Greco. Castronovo was sentenced to 25 years in prison, Ligamari to 15 and Greco to 20. Salamone became a fugitive during the trial and probably is in hiding in Sicily. Ligamari was released in 1995 but commited suicide by hanging, in his home (together with his son) in 1999. Mazzara was murdered while free on 1,5 million dollar bail and was found in Brooklyn in 1986. Because of all the appeals, it wasn´t until 1989 that the convicted drug traffickers actually were thrown in the slammer house. And I believe Castronovo is still incarcerated, while I´m not sure about Greco.

Here is a copy of an newspaper article published in Gannet Westchester Newspapers, dated April 10, 1984:
"Among those arrested in the last two days was Gaetano 'The Uncle" Badalamenti, 50, of Sicily and Rio de Janeiro, described as Italy's most wanted fugitive. He is accused of arranging the importation of the herion into the United States. Also arrested was Salvatore "Toto" Catalano, 43, of Queens, a reputed drug-trafficking captain in the Boaanno family and operator of the Al Dente Pizza restaurant in Forest Hills. He is charged with distributing the heroin to major urban centers after it had been brought into this country. Charged in the conspiracy but still at large were Cesare "Tall Guy" Bonventre and Baldassare "Baldo" Amato, both of Brooklyn, who were bodyguards of slain Bonanno boss Carmine Galante. Both were with Galante when he was gunned down in a Brooklyn restaurant on July 12, 1979, and immediately dropped out of sight. Badalamenti, who officials said is suspected of hundreds of murders in Italy and the U.S., was arrested at an apartment in Madrid, Spain, where he was allegedly discussing a drug deal. Authorities said he had sent many of his nephews and other relatives to open pizza parlors in small Midwest towns to serve as distribution points for heroin he helped import into this country. "You can go into one of these places for a slice of pizza and the guy behind the counter would be a major drug dealer," Giuliani said."
The article further states:
"Others charged in the complaint are: Giuseppe Ganci, 50, Lorenzo Devardo, 38, and Rosario Dispenza, 51, of Queens; Filippo Casamento, 58, of Brooklyn; Salvatore Mazzurco, 48, Joseph Lamberti, 52, and salvatore Lamberti, 52. of Nassau County; Frank Castronovo, 50, Gaetano Mazzara, 49, Giovanni Ligammari, 45, Philip Salamone, 40, and Salvatore Greco, 51, of New Jersey, Pietro Alfano. 48, Giuseppe Trupiano and Giuseppe Vita of I l l i n o i s; Vincencenzo Randazzo, 44, and Faro Lupo of Milan, Italy, Benito Zito, 32 and Salvatore Salamone, 35, of Pennsylvania; Emanuele Palazzolo of Wisconsin; Samuel Evola, 47, of Michigan; Giuseppe Soresi, 48, Giovanni Cangialosi, Onofrio Catalano, 48, of Sicily Adriano Corti, 42, and Franco Delia Torre, 41. of Switzerland; and Giuseppe Baldinucci, in federal custody in New York."
Frank Polizzi, another New Jersey guy and a member of the Decavalcante Family, was later picked up, charged and sentenced to 20 years. Polizzi was released in 1995, but died of cancer in 2001.
However, there could have been others busted in a related charge living in those places you´ve mentioned, but sad to say, I´m not familiar with them.

was murder involved in this case or was it only heroin dealing? None of the defendents were charged for murder. However, one of the prosecutors mentioned (I think) Salvatore Catalano´s reputation and alleged involvment in the Galante murder during his opening statement. This was loudly objected by Catalano´s lawyer. Most of the defendents were convicted of conspiracy (to import and sell heroin), money laundering and racketeering. Here´s a link for those who are interested in the case, and interested in reading lenghty court documents: http://findacase.com/research/wfrmDocViewer.aspx/xq/fac.19891011_0040257.c02.htm/qxNote that this is from united states court of appeals, dated 1989.
