In the opening scene, after Bonasara is dismissed, doesnn't Don Corleone whistle to Sonny and ask Him if He's "paying attention to all this?"

"You can walk around this town without brains . . . But you can't walk around without money!"

That scene doesn't appear in the theatrical release, but in the Saga I think.

In the novel, Vito tells Tom to bring Sonny to the office for the Bonasera meeting "so he should learn some things." But, as we saw in the film, Sonny's attention was wandering--no doubt he was thinking about Lucy Mancini instead of learning from Vito how to build loyalty with someone who rejected him earlier. Vito knew all about Sonny's affair with Lucy. That's why he whistled and asked if he was paying attention--he knew he wasn't.

Sonny was never paying attention in thse meetings during the wedding... he was lways fidgeting, lighting cigarettes, looking around. He had no clue whatsoever how to be a don like his father. Thie was a foreshadowing of his mishndling of the Sollozzo meeting

That's what set Michael apart from his brothers. Fredo wanted to do some things in order to feel important; Sonny seemed to want the power without the responsibility and saw the trees, but not he forest. Michael had an appreciation for it all. He had that depth of understanding so essential to a successful anybody in anything.

I still think Mike get way too much credit for a don. sure he was better than Sonnyin certain ways and fredo but Mike dodged death/jail because of his own mistakes. i mean lets be fair without Vito telling him point blank that either Tessio or Clemenza would betray him he would have been dead. also Roth outsmarted him when everybody including pantangeli was telling him that Roth was a snake. I know I will get shit for this but i dont see how he was flawless. i mean Vito was still the best don

No question Vito was the best Don of the three. Michael lacked Vito's compassion and sense of reason. Vito commanded loyalty because people respected him. Michael, on the other hand ruled by fear.

ya I'm not saying he wasn't a capable don he obviously was by the way he beat the rest of the 5 families. However I noticed that many people claim he is the flawless don when i see that he made quite a few blunders that he got out of from pure luck or some help
