On Friday my 99 year old grandmother was sitting on her back porch, when a man came up the steps and said he was from the water company coming to check the meter. They went inside, he pulled out a chair, and told her to sit and watch the flow from the kitchen faucet.
Another man entered the front door and went down in the cellar to check the meter. My grandmother, who is blind (only able to sense vague shapes from the periphery of her vision), stood up, but was told to stay seated, which had her very concerned. She had a refrigerator behind her and walls on each side with this man standing in front of her only way out.
She wanted to ask for identification, but didn't want to let on that she was suspicious. The man asked if she lived alone, and she said that her daughter is supposed to stop by any minute. She then added that her son, who is an attorney should have been her ten minutes ago because he wanted to see the surveillance cameras that are in her house (she made up the part about there being cameras in the house, and also my uncle was 2 hours away).
The man asked whether he was a criminal attorney, but before she could answer, he yelled to his partner that everand they could go. They left, my grandmother called my mother, and they searched the house and nothing seemed to have been taken. They called the water company and police.
On Sunday an elderly couple in a nearby town noticed valuables missing after letting 2 men from the "water company" into their house friday.

OMG, that is scary Kly,. Quick thinking for a 99 year old blind woman. I assume the water company didn't send anyone out? Bad enough trying to take advantage of the elderly but a blind elderly person is especially lowdown. She sounds totally awesome Kly! God bless her. TIS

True. The water company did not send anyone out, and the newspaper article about the elderly couple victimized on Friday by the pair stressed that the water company always telephones its customers prior to sending anyone out, and their technicians are always in uniform, displaying ID as soon as they arrive.
I visited my parents yesterday in the scranton area. They live about three blocks from my grandmother. My dad isn't always coherent due to the gradual progression of Alzheimer's, but he still recognizes me. My mother says that often at night before he goes to bed he'll ask if all of the kids are in bed upstairs. He has two sisters, who are in more advanced stages of the disease. My Aunt Lo, who is my godmother, is in her 80s and although once a very happy, energetic lady, she is now without much emotion and often unresponsive. My cousin Kerry, one of her daughters, told me she did get an unexpected jolt of a response when she put on a tv movie and told her mom, "This is a movie about Queen Victoria...she did a lot for the poor in England>"
Aunt Lo, who was dazed and disconnected prior to that, suddenly snapped, "Well, she never did a god damned thing for the Irish!" My cousin was going to change the channel, but decided that maybe riling her up was better than having her sit without any response.

Is it just me, or are the people looking for charitable contributions outside of supermarkets getting way too aggressive? I mean, I like to give as much as the next guy. But not every single time I come out of Stop and Shop. It just seems to me that, first of all, they target you much more aggressively than years ago. And secondly, they give you dirty looks (and even mumble under their breath) when you say "not today." And speaking of supermarkets, the people who can't figure out how to use the self checkout machines are just too dumb to function in society .

We also have problems with aggressive money moochers outside of shops!! I can't use those stoopid self check-out things. I keep moving the bags and can never put the money in the slot correctly My wife says I am cack handed, one of our slang expressions for being a clumsy bastard!!!!
