When I first saw the trilogy in chronological order I felt the DeNiro scenes were somewhat dull - something I never felt when they were interspersed with the Nevada plotlines.
After repeated viewings I grew to appreciate the older scenes much more and now feel they are equal or superior to the rest of GFII.
I think that calling them "gimmicky" is a big stretch. It makes perfect sense to establish the beginnings of the long-standing relationships that Vito develops.

I love every scene, every second, every frame of the GF movies, even III. I've never fast-forwarded through them and I never will. Now if GF Returns was a movie, my FF button would be worn out.

Fast-forward... The Godfather?! Sorry if this thread is sounding like a broken record...but I must echo the above sentiments. That's an infamnia! As far as the Robert De Niro scenes in GFII...I'm shocked anyone would wanna fast-forward through them. For me...those scenes make GFII.

I think that's exactly what the early Vito scenes are meant to be...a companion piece to the overall story of Don Michael Corleone. The simplicity and humor of the early segments serve to contrast and therefore enhance the modern day dealings of the son who took over the family. You can't help but notice how Michael has prospered yet hurt the Corleone Family in the way he's run it. Although everyone (including me) enjoys the chronological 'Godfather Saga' when it's shown on television...I always find the latter story of Michael loses something without the DeNiro scenes being intertwined. Very heavy & at times even depressing. Yet the early scenes are just as entertaining and don't suffer a single bit when shown on their own. Apple

Originally posted by I'M GERMAN-IRISH: I know that a lot of you will disagree, but my least favorite part is Robert DeNiro as the young Vito, (except for the stalking and assassination of Don Fanucci). Other than that, I found that by our knowing beforehand that his character and family are destined to survive, there is not the same drama that the story of Michael had. And I never was convinced that DeNiro's Vito would mature into being Brando's Vito(Who else could have been, except a young Brando). Also it seemed to be just plain gimmicky; "Oh! there's the young Clemenza and Tessio" and "There's a young Hyman Roth, and now he's old and doing business with Vito's son" it has to be considered the weakest link in the two films. You are insane.
Hey, how's it going?

I would have to say that I do not FF through any parts when I choose to pop in the DVD, about twice a month. However when viewing the movie on TV I definitly change the channel during commercials and don't always make a strong effort to come back.

I can't say that I fast forward, but the first scene immediately after the Sollozzo killing in which Michael is in Sicily, bores me.
The scenes in which I never miss are the horse's head with Woltz, the meeting in which Michael volunteers to kill Sollozzo & McCluskey, Santino's death, the sitdown with Five Families, and Vito & Michael talking about how Michael will be betrayed by a Corleone associate.

In GF I I fast forward through the Sicily scenes until Don Tomassino delivers the news of Sonny's death.
No one asked but in GFIII (spolers in here)........ I always have my hand on the "speed" button. After Vincent bites Zasa's ear, I fast forward to the Atlantic City secne, watch through Michael's stroke, and the midnight visit of George Hamilton to the Archbishop, then I skip to Sicily watch the scene where they cross-cut the scenes with Vincent shaving Michael and Vincent "betraying" Michael, then I skip to the point where Neri is on the train to Rome, I watch the hits, skip the opera, and then watch the ending, which is the best part of the movie. In all I have it down to about twenty minutes.
"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"

Like anyone else, I don't put GFIII in the same league as GFI&II, and I admit to scanning over the scenes of the opera on a few viewings (I love opera, and while Cavelleria Rusticana is beautiful, it's not one of the best out there) But Don T- I'm surprised that you scan over the scenes in Vincent's apartment with Grace- in a movie with so few characters that we haven't met before, character development was not a large concern- unfortunately, this extended to the characters that needed it. The Vinnie's apartment sequence was probably the best piece of character devlopment in the movie- it shows that Vinnie, like his Father, is a ladies' man and can be rash and impulsive, but like Michael, he's a thinker- in the time it took to shoot both assassins, he already had a story to tell the police that got him off the hook for what amounted to cold-blooded murder. And perhaps most important, you see that even with these similarities, he's his own man- he has no qualms about using Grace as bait- "Go get me a glass of water." Sammy The Fish
Say it to his face, just one time!
