Saw the trailer on TV the other day. Not really interested in a screen version of a "hit Broadway musical." But Cruise doesn't do too bad covering these songs.

Off-topic, but I read pieces of the recent Playboy interview Cruise gave and he more or less blamed some of those infamous interviews (like Matt Lauer) on editing for why he came off as..."funny."

Let's be frankly honest. Cruise can be a tremendously wonderful actor, MAGNOLIA or COLLATERAL and so forth. (Though IMO at times he can be insufferably coasting.) He's made some good movies. Hell his last recebt MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie was actually pretty damn fun. That one, plus some early supporting actor Oscar buzz for Cruise on ROCK OF AGES, means Hollywood has accepted him again because he's actually making money for them again. Sure why not?

But editing or no editing, the dude is undisputedly still fucking bonkers. Hello Hollyweird, your prince is back!

~The higlight is 1:05 saying only Scientologists stop to try to help people in car crashes. Yes I'm aware he was trying to make a metaphor (well I hope he was), but it's funny not because he sounds "crazy," but because he comes off as unintentionally goofy. (And for a tape edited by the Church of Scientology for it's membership, what does that say?) Comedy gold.

What a strange gallery, yet amusing.

For the most part, I cannot stand Tom Cruise because he essentially makes the same movie again and again. It's yet another movie in which he is good at something. Here are some examples:

Cocktail: good bartender
Top Gun: good pilot
Days of Thunder: good race car driver
The Firm: good attorney
Color of Money: good pool player
Jerry Maguire: good sports agent
A Few Good Men: good military attorney
Rain Man: good at being an all-around douche

I couldn't really follow the interview that ronnie posted, but I agree with him that it is comedy gold. I only got through 2 and a half minutes. It reminded me of the scene in BOOGIE NIGHTS where Dirk and Chest Rockwell were being interviewed by Maggie and despite their efforts to sound sophisticated, they bombed.

LOL! I never thought of it like that. He definitely has his formula. But he's taken more "unorthodox" roles too...

Interview with the Vampire
Eyes Wide Shut
Magnolia
Tropic Thunder

But he knows where his bread is buttered. Hence, the reason we'll be getting Top Gun 2 and Mission Impossible 5.

I love "A Few Good Men". The dialogue is wonderful, typical Sorkin.

Sorkin is a wonderful screenwriter. He's drug addled and out of his mind, but he's still a great writer.

I might actually have to break down and subscribe to HBO so I can watch his new show!

How about we complain too about Clint Eastwood for playing someone good at shooting people or flying space shuttles or a good secret service agent or cowboy?

In the end of the day, the problem I have with the Cruise movies that I do not like is because I didn't like them for one reason or another. (Though I hated TOP GUN and DAYS OF THUNDER, or the same movie basically.)

If we want to talk about the actor, who plays the same character every time he's in front of a camera, the award has to go to Tony Danza.

Yeah, my description of pretty much any Tom Cruise movie is it's Tom Cruise wearing a different outfit and I would add: Tom Cruise playing arrogant bartender, arrogant fighter pilot, arrogant gambler, arrogant race car driver etc.
