I'd imagine that a mobster does not need to be highly intelligent, but clever in order to survive. Also, he has to have some kind of strategic thinking, I guess.
AJ is just outright stupid and weak, he would have been killed quite fast. Weird as it may sound, Meadow would be a good choice.

I kinda wish they would have kept Jackie Jr. alive for a while longer and in the picture just to provide a stark contrast to AJ: AJ is a spoiled rich kid, Jackie Jr is a gangster wannabe. AJ doesn't have a clue what his dad does (at least for a while), Jackie Jr. tells anyone within earshot that his dad used to run the Jersey mafia and uses it to make himself look badass. AJ is lazy and doesn't want to work for most of the series, Jackie Jr. has a crew of hoodlums and peddles drugs to college kids. AJ doesn't have much of a love life for most of the series, and until much later on is barely shown talking to any girls, Jackie Jr. hooks up with Meadow (and pretty much tries to date rape her in one scene) and has whores on the side.
It was a nice contrast between the Apriles and Sopranos.

Weird as it may sound, Meadow would be a good choice. Yeah, Meadow was sharp as a tack and had she been born male she might of been the "heir apparent" Soprano. As for Jackie Jr, he was another kid who was spoiled by a wealthy dad. He wanted to be a mobster not for the money but for the status, and some half-assed notion about continuing his father's legacy. Hence he was sloppy. These kids weren't raised int he atmosphere of their parents and their forefathers. Now take for example a son of a soldier or a capo, and they usually got the grit to ascend in the "life". Then again it's all about if they are born with a "silver spoon" imo.

It likes like Tony Montana doesn't want his bestfriend Manolo go out date with his sister because he doesn't want the lifestyle bring into his sister's life where she can get killed or get kidnapped, etc. Both of them want daughter/sister to have better life and better education.

AJ Jr is not street smart like his father. Look what AJ Jr did some stupid shit like when he tried to kill Uncle Jun...that was a dumb move and yet he talked about Godfather scene to his father about his favorite scene.....AJ Jr is not about that life.

Why would anyone be "interested" in the mob ? especially someone who has a shot at education, has rich parents and can make it legit ? Its a life of constant paranoia, backstabbings and two faced people why would you want to be used by some f**k for his well-being? its not a life anyone (or at least many people) has "chosen", forget this hollywood BS. + he saw what happen to jackie jr. Aj is quite a realistic character, lol at everyone gunning him down. Good points but some people need something to fuel their adrenaline. They get a thrill out of being bad. Know what I am saying?

Meadow being a future half-legitimate female mobster would have been a great back reference to Annalisa Zucca who much earlier in the show controlled her family in old Naples.
AJ could have entered the world of the mafia quite easily thanks to his father, but he would be nothin' but cannon fodder.

Watching season 3 last night and Tony was talking to Jackie Aprile Jr. about how he was upset with him cause he was involving himself in the mob and not pursuing to be a doctor at Rutgers University , since that was his fathers wish. He even admitted to Jackie Jr. that he never wants his own son to be in the mob.
That answers my question.
