Artie was always pathetic, the way he used to walk around the tables bothering his customers while they were trying to eat was also pathetic. The worst is when he shot the rabbit in his backyard and served it to the couple who came in to his place when he was ready to close - I always wondered if they got sick eating that sh!t?

Man I was watching Season 3 and that guy just lost it. He ends up wanting to divorce his wife and admits his love for Adriana?
These are just a couple examples. He ends up always feeling sorry for himself.
Your thoughts? The way I see it, Artie had a lot of seasoning to do. He always catered for others, but never enough for himself. The episode in which he goes to the guy for his $5000 was so embarrassing. He throttles the guy, an obvious tactic the other one knew how to quickly counter and then Artie lets the prick rip his ear and haul his ass out of the apartment? Pitiful.

I think Artie deep down inside wanted to b a gangster and didn't like thev route his life took. If he wanted to be a gangster, he certainly wasn't built for it. Sure he beat up Benny (oddly enough), but notice how he runs off after those indian protestors cause a riot on Colombus day... He's running towards the car lol. As mentioned, the burning of the restaurant and Tony denying it broke his heart. On top of that he can nearly make ends meet. Charmagne is constantly nagging him, and his own employees (martina), steals from him. His 50k loan went to shit putting his whole relationship with Tony at stake. The guy hadda lot of problems.

To be honest id have wanted a divorce too if i was Artie, Charmaine was just a constant bull buster despite how hard he worked, even though she was right morally, even at other times she was constantly sour faced and always bitching about something.
Rarity to see her happy in the show.

sincerely, i like Artie as character. If anything, his fault is to be too weak to his wife; if he accepted the tickets for the cruise and closed the restaurant, there would have was no need to burn it.
in the history of the Mafia many have benefited from having a mobster as friend, as Skinny D'Amato that managing the club 500 in atlantic city. For the $ 50.000 Artie if he really wanted to scare someone to get back the money, would have taken at least a baseball bat or brass knuckles without considering that Tony has deleted his loan.
The trouble of Artie is that who what is Tony and he is envious, but at the same time does nothing to try to ''improve his situation'', it's too good, because to be a criminal you have to be a fucking son of a bitch.

Artie's actions reflect someone on the inevitable downward slide in life. He off as pathetic because he was a relatively honest man who wanted to serve others. When surrounded by sociopaths who only want to serve themselves, it's a recipe for disaster.
But he also made choices that contributed to his troubles. He was stuck with an emasculating wife and in a dead end job. Yes, he owned his own restaurant, but it was essentially at its peak. Charmaine wouldn't let him expand the business, and Vesuvio was stale - the menu hadn't changed, and the service was slipping. After 20+ years of playing things straight, he's still scraping to get by. High-end restaurants are a fickle thing, and it doesn't take much to ruin it - a fire, a strong competitor, a recession, whatever.
His lifelong friends screwed him over - the fire, Tony ran up huge tabs and was slow to pay, the crew always mocked the restaurant and victimized him with scams, and even Scatino tried bumming money off him.
And it doesn't help when he tries to be bold, it always turns to shit, from his loaning money to the Frenchman to the Columbus Day protest to his attempt to market his pasta sauce.

You're right about one thing, the money to loan to the French; could go to ask for the money with the gun with which killed the rabbit or could seek help from Tony instead of getting manhandled and groped suicide; if he asked Tony to say that his restaurant was off-limits, crew members don't would try to cheat him, same thing with Charmaine if she said "Fuck you, I close the restaurant and go on cruise, with you or without you," Tony asked him if he would loanshark money on his own, and he said no. Sorry about Artie but would have to understand that it takes a bit of nastiness to get ahead in the life.
