http://www.antimafiaduemila.com/2012102239405/cronache-italia/mafia-boss-si-suicida-in-carcere.htmlOne of the bosses of a town in Agrigento has killed himself in prison. This is the second boss in Agrigento to do so, within a few days. The boss of Casteltermini (Agrigento), Francesco Baiamonte, had committed suicide last Saturday, but the news just leaked out today, in his prison cell in Pagliarelli of Palermo. The day before, the preliminary hearing judge, sentenced him to 10 years for criminal association in Agrigento. Last week, another Agrigento boss, the boss of Palma di Montechiaro, Pietro Ribisi, also killed himself in prison. --------------------------------------------------------- So, this is what happens over there when a boss can't handle the time in jail, yet won't turn informant.

Dwalin, I can almost say 100% Pietro Ribisi was a boss. But if you find anything saying he wasn't, I'd be interested in reading it. He also had one Pietro Giro killed, just because he was related to a stiddaro I think. Nothing wrong with this.

Here they say Pietro wasn't formally made, even though he was quite important in the group. I just assumed that he can't be considered a real boss if not formally made. In this text it's also said that the formal head of the family was Rosario. "Nothing wrong" in the sense that the information is correct, or "nothing wrong" meaning there is nothing wrong in the action committed?

Then if that's the case about Pietro and this article does back up what you said, then it's just more corrupt Italian gov't calling a guy a boss, just to slap heavier charges on him. Not the first time. I mentioned this just recently on here somewhere. So it may be true. I think in terms of punishment it doesn't matter if he was a boss or not, since he personally participated in a murder of a judge (a honest one, as far as I know) and his son. But you are right, in Italy they always call the arrested ones "bosses" just to make headlines. "Nothing wrong with this" as in who cares about any stiddari or their family getting killed. They caused enough damage and took enough lives and started enough wars over there. They're not innocent in any way. So he killed a member of their family. Name of the game. I may agree to a certain point if the victim is a gangster, but from what I know, this one wasn't, he was just a family member.

Is there mention of method of death? I am always leery of suicides associated w/organized crime.
Black, is it really better that these men should take dozens w/them? Think. It doesn't say in this article, but another one in an italian paper says he hanged himself. It is true though, in Italy, is also shameful to kill yourself, rather than doing your time. In the case of Ribisi, his son actually denied that his father would ever kill himself and insists he was murdered in prison. This was probably to try and avoid the shame that goes with it.

The more they take with them the better off society will be. Killing yourself is not only a coward move but like Carmela said its a fucking disgrace to your family (and I don't mean crime family)...........soliai

There's no justification for suicide if you're a Catholic. Ever. And many Sicilian Mafiosi are devout in their own way. I always found that interesting how they lie, cheat, steal and murder their entire lives yet still consider themselves to be good catholics. How they justify it to themselves is beyond me. If you try hard enough, you can talk yourself into anything. It's called rationalizing. But I agree with your post .

Do you think in their corrupt sick little brains they actually think they're a benefit to society? I wouldn't doubt they do. IMHO they're nothing but a bunch of leeches that do pretty much nothing but harm people and society in general. Honestly i think they're a cancer that has to be cut out, though i doubt we'll see that happen in our lifetime.

A very short & unscientific list of OC suicides: . 1. Frank Nitti, Chicago boss facing legal problems at the time. Musta been alotta guys wouldn't mind seeing him gone.
2. Viginia Hill, committed suicide in Austria in 1966. I'm surprized she lived as long as she did.
3. Gambino Soldier & informant kills self after some evidence introduced in indictments may point to his role as CI.
Also during the 1960s/70s there was a rash of suicides by hanging in city jails in NY. Please, was I born yesterd

But what made this newsworthy is that 2 bosses from the same province killed themselves while in prison within days of one another. A province being similar to say...Brooklyn. Each town in Bklyn having a boss and 2 of those bosses killing themselves. I don't understand the "Please, was I born yesterd" part. But I'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed.

"yesterday", my poor editing skills.
The gist of my statement is that I believe those boys/men were murdered by someone and were not suicides.
You gonna finish that?

That is so interesting. So this brings up a question. How does the Sicilian mafia look upon anyone that commits suicide? Do they think that this is heroic (he did it for the cause) or cowardly (he couldn't stand up to his punishment), not to mention the whole Catholics can't commit suicide, it's a sin... I think it depends. Like m2w mentioned, some have taken their own life to do what they consider honorable, to get their seized assets released back to their family. In Lo Presti's case where he was wiretapped, he felt shamed into it. In the case of this one here that couldn't even do 10 years (and yes, he would have had house arrest in probably 2 years), it would be shameful. No way around that one. But the other one had already done 14 years in and still facing life in prison, I guess he couldn't take it. Honestly, I don't think religion has any part in it at that point.
