These are the most famous mob fugitives that i can think of right now that were on the run(or still are)for the longest time...
Matteo Messina Denaro is on the run since 1993
Bernardo Provenzano has been on the run from police for more than four decades
Whitey Bulger was 16 years in hiding
Lo Piccolo had been a fugitive since 1983 until 2007
Giuseppe Falsone had been on the run for 10 years
Gerlandino Messina had been on the run for 11 years
Domenico Raccuglia has been on the run for 15 years
From the old timers Vito Genovese was on the run in Italy for 7 or 8 years i think
And i gotta put Casso at the end, although he was only 3 years as a fugitive he had a lot of "operations" goin on at the time while he was on the run
any other thoughts to be added to the list?

1. How many of these guys are Italian as opposed to Italian-American? It seems from news reports that the Italians are quicker to to go on the lam than their Am. cousins.
2. Why in the world does Cosa Nostra (CN) appear in Court or wait to get pinched when they know they are going down for life or at least 10 or more years? I have never understood that.
You gonna finish that?

Except for a couple the entire list toodoped put up is from italy. They are tried and convicted in absentia in italy. All they have to do at that point is get captured and that's it. Guys like Messina are born into their families and that's the life they have. It's nothing like here. He was looking to avenge his father's death and prevent more bloodshed, he killed a cop, he kidnapped that little boy Giuseppe Di Matteo, but it was never about the money. It's more often than not about revenge, power and honor for their families over money. Guys in the US won't go on the lam and live in a hole in the floor.

I am not up on this Messina; but what you said about the Americans not living in a hole in the ground I agree with. But what do they think awaits them in US prisons? 23 hours a day locked in an 8X10 concrete cell? Some of the Fed'l facilities are a little nicer and more like Army barracks, still. And State prisons are absolute hell holes: Filthy, trash ridden, broken stuffed plumbing, constant noise, the smell is always there of shit, piss & sweat. Plus, it's always cold. They keep the AC jacked up so the prisoners stay docile. And all the prisoners get to wear is a 100% polyester jump suit often orange (goes w/anything); under wear or sweatshirts is at the discretion of the facility. Better to slip away to Brazil or Montana or anywhere. But you're right, they wouldn't think of it.

yeah, they wouldn't think of slipping away to Brazil or wherever because when they leave their territory, they lose control of their family. And usually they do have some contact with their family..wives, kids, etc. They always find a way. Although, Falsone, who was also boss, was found in France and he's from the same town in Sicily as Messina.
And like many of Italian bosses that have been caught, Messina is locked up 23 hours a day (under article 41-bis regime) and for only one hour a month can have a visitation, but only thru glass, etc etc. If he would ever talk, they will take him out of this regime. He was actually hiding out in a condo one town over. He had been in his own town for all those years, but then moved and that's when he was caught shortly after. Usually, when they move, they're caught. Theyre only as safe as their close circle of guys around them protecting them.

Carmela, I've read about Italian gangsters making it to So. America, Australia, No. Europe and even the USA to start over again. Shoot, that's how our CN got started.

Goes to show you that it is not easy being on the lam and having to stay in the same location all the time. Sounds kind of like a prison, although you don't have the bars, it sounds like you wouldn't have a lot of room to stretch. Yes, you'd be making money, but not being able to spend it.
