he can't retire: they keep pulling him back in.

What do you think did Michael do after he lost his daughter? We'll never really know. All we have to conclude what's happened are the flashback scenes (the dances with Appollonia, Kay and Mary) and the last scene in Sicily.

I believe that (maybe after a short return to New York and some psychological treatment after the nervous breakdown) he stayed in Sicily in Don Tomassino's house. He died alone. In the book Vito's last word's are "Life is beautiful." If Michael had some last words they probably would have been: "Life is unfair."

O don't think he was ever the same. Obviously Kay never had anything to do with him again, Connie may have tried to bring him back to NY for a time, but my guess is his diabetes got worse, and he basically turned it over to Vincent, returned to Sicily and lived out his days in misery. He died alone, his corpse being snifffed by a dog. Even Vito had a better death --- running around his garden playing with his grandson (although there's aother trauma for Anthony, who watched his grandfatherdie, his sisterdie, and more or less bore witness to the death of his uncle Fredo.

"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"

"I stood in the courtroom like a fool."

"I am Constanza: Lord of the idiots."

I doubt he ever went back to New York again. Probably just waited for death at the palazzo in Sicily.

I think he had to return to NY for a while to straighten out financial affairs. Connie and George Hamilton would have been forceful about that. He probably went through the motions and returned to Sicily. Living in Don T's house would be a fitting finale.
