I am relatively new to this board, so this question may have been answered before. But I always wondered, was the family that helped young Vito escape Don Cicci the same family that they came to visit after Vito came to power? At one point Vito tells young Fredo to give a present to "Grandma" so it makes me think that they might be Carmella's family.

well in the novel, I believe they wer ejust relatives who were helping Vito escape. When Michael returns to sicily in Godfather Part III to the town of Corleone all hsi relatives are dead or moved.

The family he visited was that of Don Tammasino who helped him make the hit on Don Cicci and got shot in the leg doing it.

Don Hunyad,

As said in the previous post, it was Don Tomassino's family who helped with the hit on Don Cicci. If you remember he then gets shot in the legs by one of Cicci's guards. Now go to Godfather I, when Michael is in Italy, remember the guy who comes to give Michael the message that Sonny has been killed, he is on crutches, that is an obviously older Don Tomassino. As for the rest of the family in Italy, I am sure that many were from Mama Corleone's side of the family.

Thank you for your respones, but my question is how did Vito know who Tommasino was? Did he have a previous relationship with him? How did he know that Tommasino would go against Don Cicco?
