when Luca told the woman to throw his baby in the furnace because there couldn't be any of that race or whatever did he mean because it was not Italian, Because the mother was a whore, or because Luca didn't want anything that came from his loins to walk free in the world.

I just reread the novel not long ago and he made the midwife throw it in the furnace because it was Irish! It doesn't ACTUALLY state that but I assume it was becase of the "race" comment and the baby's mother was an Irish girl.

The novel explains that the midwife didn't understand what Luca meant by his choice of words, "race" (whether that meant the baby was part Irish, OR if meant the baby's mother was a whore, OR if it meant that it sprang from Luca's own loins). I'm going to have to agree with that. If Luca was really touchy about the Irish thing, he probably would have resented Tom and the Don for having an adopted son.
What is there to sing about? There is singing when babies are baptized, when you celebrate a marriage. Men sing as they work. Soldiers sing as they march into battle. And there is singing when people die.
