MacKenzie was one of Bulger's associates and the impression I get was that it was a voyeuristic thrill for him and the other guys to watch the "activity". The gym they used was really a private facility open only to inside guys. MacKenzie comes off as a real scumbag who had an attack of "conscience" similar to the ones most rats get when the walls close in,so who knows how involved he may have been,or if he himself ever "indulged". As far as other criminals go,if true, this was not a widely known thing outside the inner circle. Also Bulger had enough clout and was feared to the point where no one was going to admit that they knew about it. Again, I'm not saying that I know this to be true,I'm just asking that outside of MacKenzies and Carr's books, and the Boston Herald article, there has been any other mentions of it.

Informants evidence is near always lies, is my view of such people. fear would not stop top criminals working with Bulger if a rapist of underage girls. rat associates saying they was looking on in gym in not evidence in my view but is he up on any rape cases ? i do not think he is. inner circle of similar rapists in top criminal gang would never happen but sex ring of people who are not top criminals does happen all the time.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/05...4jHM/story.htmlAnd speaking of Eddie Mackenzie, he'll be heading back to the clink soon enough. The director of operations for an obscure but wealthy Beacon Hill church stood before a federal judge Wednesday, accused of raiding the coffers of the congregation where he said he found redemption and enlightenment.
Federal agents arrested Edward J. MacKenzie, a 54-year-old self-proclaimed henchman for mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, after he was indicted by a grand jury on charges of racketeering, extortion, bribery, and money laundering.
MacKenzie, who lives in Weymouth, started working at the Swedenborgian Church on the Hill in 2003 and immediately began scheming with coconspirators, according to his indictment. Their alleged goal was to “obtain power and influence” and use both to “defraud the church of its considerable financial holdings and profit.”
