Gotti and Scarfo have always been seen as two great examples of the fall of LCN. Scarfo was a paranoid, murdering psycopath, while Gotti was a flamboyant guy who used huge gatherings at his club to stroke his ego. They were different in ways I think though as Scarfo, despite his shortcomings took great precautions in running the family. As anyone who has read Leonetti's book would know, and I don't think he was caught on tape he was convicted on testimony of turncoats and the recordings of underlings. Gotti on the other hand didn't do none of that and stroked his ego by strutting in front of the FBI, and was convicted on his voice (even if Gravano didn't turn he was done). If Scarfo wasn't such a psyco and scared a top guy into turning and Gotti not such an egomaniac and operate more subtly, they both could of been effective bosses In my opinion. Any thoughts? I'm going get blasted on this on. I have just started reading Mafia Prince and of course other materials on Nicky Scarfo and his associates. I think Nicky Scarfo was very effective as a underboss but not a boss. He was too quick to kill and his ultimate demise was people flipping to save their own asses. His ultimate downfall was being boss he should have stayed underboss to have someone up top to keep him in check. Both of these men in my opinion should not have been bosses. They were both great as underbosses. The thing I like best about Scarfo he didn't allow his people to sell drugs were Gotti did.

As crazy and murderous and paranoid as Scarfo was the family did well under him everyone made money all the soldiers had money and they were for the most part very loyal with the exception of leonetti caramandi delgiorno and milano his soldiers were stand up guys and real gangsters
and for the record Scarfo was never underboss he was consigliere Pete Casella was Testa's underboss

I agree that Scarfo would have been better not as boss - he is LCN all the way so if they had a more level headed boss he would have obeyed the rules and not brought the family down. Scarfo shook down the dealers in Philly and South Jersey - street tax is when they started making a ton of cash. It does look like he allowed his fam to enjoy their money and share the benefits - using the boat in Florida, jersey shore etc ... All that being said Scarfo was way to public -- uncle joe had a good run although much less earning but he wasn't greedy and didnt have too many enemies I don't think. Uncle joe is most definitely a greedy bastard, he was nothing more than a bookie who pulled a trigger once for scarfo he never had power before Joey gave it to him

When you think about it, Scarfo expanded the Philadelphia family's interests - HEREU Local 54 in Atlantic City, the street tax, political corruption, etc. Technically speaking, as boss, he had every right to demand tribute from guys like Riccobene. Of course, he ended up pushing too hard, was too quick to resort to murder, and that's what caused the problems. Still, for all his faults, I think Scarfo was more shrewd and more capable of being a boss than Gotti.

Red: The guy was the Blade nick the blade, Nicky him self had that little man problem ,and he looked like he was always plotting very scary ,I was at the house or down in the office at Scarf Inc. 4or 5 days a week .This guy had seen me there since i was a boy but still he looked like he wanted to put a hit on you all the time...I said it before his eyes were like MANSON look at his pic any of them ,The eyes...he was the crazy one. Serpiente: Let ask just one question I knew Scarfo too! no offense but are you of sicilian background, scarfo has been described as hitler at times. This I can assure you 110% scarfo hated certain peoples because of their origin. that being said he left everybody else alone, I don't care what anybody says scarfo hated drugs, he told me to my face that yes most people have a little evil in them but!!!! they also have a little good in them and if they find out that scarfoinc deals in drugs than maybe those same people won't be his friends. I remember being in his office one day a guy comes in and after the guy leaves nicky turns around and says I don't trust that guy. Siggies are always up to something all they got on their mind is money and treason. however if you came to his office with ideas of how earn money he left you alone.

http://www.newsplex.com/news/headlines/38499564.htmlfbi agent ed robb inpersonated the lcn here the siggies believed him that he was a friend of theirs in the end they turned him over to the dea after they made a deal with while believing that he was legit lcn. nicky felt that scarfoinc was skating on razor blades with these siggies being next to him. he described to me that it was like walking through a swamp filled with venimous snakes, however you should know that being around him. some where on discovery there is documentary on fbi ed robb. serpiente one time I mentioned to nicky about a good restaurant that happened to be sicilain i didn't know cos I don't care anyways Lawrence says that restaurant is sicilian nicky turns to me and says you got some kinda of connection with the sicilian peoples. that is how rascits scarfo was. now
