I did the Genovese family earlier, now on to the Gambinos. If the membership seems low, that's because it is. The Genovese total was higher because Valachi was able to provide more information on his own family. Additionally, this is compatible with what the government knew at the time, explaining the inclusion of members we know were dead today, i.e. Mangano, Squillante, etc.

1963:

Estimated membership: 182 (I would probably estimate ~250 for the Gambinos at this time period - possibly more)

How bout Tommy Orefice haha if you say it like [ora-fuss]. I think it's probably [oruh-feechie]

There are 22 Gambino skippers?! That's crazy. I was thinking maybe 12 Capo's. Do some of them share a crew??

A few are in jail, so some of those listed are almost certainly acting on their behalf. It's not a concrete list by any means, just a way of comparing the family's membership throughout the years.

Thanks alot for this Snakes, especially for the legend showing who was on previous lists. It's amazing that some of these guys are listed on the 63 list and are still only soldiers. Then again who knows how active they are maybe they are retired, or only hold some minor gambling or loansharking rackets and always have.

There has always been between 20-25 skippers for the gambinos
Been that way since time of the memorial

A March 1986 raid on DiBernardo's office seized alleged "child pornography and financial records." As "a result of the Postal Inspectors seizures [a federal prosecutor] is attempting to indict DiBernardo on child pornography violations" according to an FBI memo dated May 20, 1986.

There's still 20-25 now? I've seen a few recent charts that are of course not conclusive but are usually on the 12-15 range maybe a few more but i haven't seen 20.

Found this while looking up information on some of the old timers, or hat trick guys lol.

Robert Crapanzano was apparently in an IBT local and was actually forced to resign his post for bringing "reproach upon the International Brotherhood of Teamsters" and by violating his "oath" as an officer in Local 27 by being a "member of La Cosa Nostra"!

the 12 to 15 range is basically the size of what the colombos, lucheses, and bonnanos are(with the colombos being the smallest), while the geneveses and gambinos both still have a little over 20.

I just thought crews were bigger than 5-10 members each. By count of 170 made men w/ 23 capo's that makes it 7 members per crew. Just surprising.

For the record, although the number will obviously fluctuate to some extent, about 200 members is the official estimate for the Gambino family.

Yeah, I basically just took Muk's chart and rolled with it for the 2013. I figured it contained most of the "known" members. I would guess that some may be dead.

I was able to get the 1963 listings from FBI reports a couple months after the Valachi hearings. It's actually pretty impressive to see how quickly they got on the ball after the hearings.

The 1988 listings are from the Senate Subcommittee Hearings on organized crime - "25 Years After Valachi". A few months ago, I posted the 1983 lists from a similar subcommittee.

They did start going after the Mafia at that time, due in no small part to Robert Kennedy, but the effort didn't last. An ongoing campaign against the mob sort of died out after Kennedy was killed and didn't really become a big national priority again until the 1980's. By that point, prosecutors were finally starting to see the value of RICO and the Reagan administration really supported the effort. That's why you don't see a real attack on the Mafia, on a national level, until the 1980's.

Couple of other Gambino names that jump to mind of guys who would have been made in 1963.

Anthony "Charlie Brush" Zangarra ( I think a capo)
Frank Locassio (definitely made pre 57)
Stephen Armone
Carmine & Donato Fatico
Mike Cirelli
Alfred and Ralph Epploito
Alphonse "Funzie" Mosca

How much longer until the feds put greaseball or Cali away for life?

The last Gambino heavy sent away for serious time was Little Nicky. Prior to that, the feds were mostly helping the family by sending those Gotti jadrools to prison.
