This was the greatest college football team ever assembled. EVER. There is no team who could touch them.

I realized how good they were when they destroyed at that time undefeated Maryland 63-0. You're right DonTomasso, best team ever assembled in College.

Disagree...2005 USC Trojans, 2001 Miami Hurricanes and the 1991 Miami Hurricanes...both teams had 7 first round draft picks...Hard to discount Bama in 2010-2012. FSU in 1993 had quite a few 1st rounders. Tough discussion as the game has changed over the years.

Beans, are you talking about that powerhouse, juggernaut, kickass Maryland Terrapin team? You and DT can celebrate, but don't go crazy. lol

Personally, I'd rank this team 3rd of the 3 championship teams. I'd take the Florida State championship team from '99, first. Lots of future pros on that team. And they went wire to wire in the major polls. I'd take the Charlie Ward team second.

Regardless, congrats to the Seminoles. That was a helluva game and a great season.

Florida State was undeniably the best team of the year, but I don't think that a serious argument can be made that it is the best team ever.

Good arguments here, esp Trojans and 2001 Hurricanes. FSU 1993 lost to Notre Dame and backed into the Championship game when ND then lost to Boston College, and I think someone else like Texas also lost the last week of the season.

The game has changed so much over the years.. even over the past 5 years, I stand by my statement this was the best colllege team ever. I have never seen such a cohesive unit.

QUESTION: Has there ever been a team where the head coach who suceeded a coach who won a National Chamionship won one in his own right?

Dennis Erickson won a championship in his first year at Miami after Jimmy Johnson won two years earlier. Erickson won another championship a couple of years later with the Hurricanes. That one came to my mind, but there must be other instances.

And Johnson won his title after succeeding Howard Schnellenberger, who won a title. I guess that's a trifecta for Miami coaches.

Les Miles at LSU (succeeded Nick Saban), Dennis Erickson x 2 ( succeeded Jimmy Johnson), Lloyd Carr MICHIGAN (succeeded Bo Schembechler), Dan Devine ND won in 1977 after succeeding Ara Parsegian who won 2 in 1966 & 1973, Jimmy Johnson 1987 succeeding Howard Schnellenberger off the top of my head.

They are bigger and faster than any team from the past.

Agree to disagree. Almost impossible to top the speed of the 2001 Hurricanes. Roster full of NFL studs:

Offense

1. Willis McGahee RB (1st round pick)
2. Clinton Portis RB (2nd round pick)
3. Kellen Winslow Jr TE (1st round pick)
4. Jeremy Shockey TE (1st round pick)
5. Bryant McKinnie LT (1st round pick)
6. Andre Johnson WR (1st round pick)

Defense

1. William Joseph DT
2. D.J Williams LB (1st round pick)
3. Jonathan Vilma LB (1st round pick)
4. Chris Campbell LB (died in car accident, projected 1-2 rd pk)
5. Mike Rumph DB (1st round pick)
6. Philip Buchanon DB (1st round pick)
7. Ed Reed S (1st round pick)

***Other notable team members who were underclassmen but still played quite a bit:

1. Vince Wilfork- 1st round
2. Sean Taylor- 1st round
3. Vernon Carey- 1st round
4. Kelly Jennings- 1st round
5. Jerome McDougle- 1st round
6. Antrelle Rolle- 1st round
7. Frank Gore- 3rd round
8. Rocky McIntosh- 2nd round
9. Roscoe Parrish- 2nd round

Plus 17 others that were drafted into the NFL between the 3rd round-7th round.

Future NFL Hall of Famers:

Bryant McKinnie
Andre Johnson
Vince Wilfork
Ed Reed
Frank Gore (potentially)

There has never been a team assembled like this...EVER...all thanks to Butch Davis, one of the best recruiters in college football.

***And if I gave you the 2003-2005 roster for USC, it is right up there with the Canes, but the success level in the NFL isn't even close.

Wasn't Frank Gore involved with that team, too?

Agreed that was one great team, except you forgot to mention that the Two Live Crew guy Luther someone ran the payroll.
